A huge shoutout to Carol’s Daughter and their #LoveDelivered initiative, which focuses on equipping Black moms and allies with the information they need to advocate for themselves and others through greater access to doula services, grants for doula training, online resources and connection to experts. For me, there’s something about becoming a mother that instinctively ignites a Mama Bear within; a fierce desire to protect, nurture and be empowered throughout this entire process. I’ve realized just how much my voice and instincts are to be trusted, despite still learning everything as a first-time mother. With the rise of maternal mortality – and the harrowing fact that Black mothers are at the crest with 3x a higher rate – an essential facet of our support system was having a doula. Not only as a personal health advocate, but also as someone to help amplify and center my voice, needs and intuition.
