I’ve been drawing for a while and the style has shifted but the goal hasn’t (charts about injustice should make us *feel* as well as think). Last week was surreal and I don’t know what to say about any of it except thank you, thank you, thank you and I hope I don’t let you down. Note, these stats don’t take into account changes in the price of being alive. I refuse to talk about a cost of living crisis (which implies some kind of natural force that can’t be stopped), we have a wage crisis. We have a crisis in what level of profit is deemed normal for companies to pursue. For the past two years, writing for tv has been an absolute dream. But that’s because I’ve been able to pay the rent with my illustration work – if I was solely reliant on writing income, I don’t think I could get by. #wgastrong Source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2000-2018 🤝UNIONIZE🤝 I’m standing with my fellow members of the writers guild because unions work. As part of the investigation, the owner of a scaffolding business was also accused of bribing inspectors. So! To say that this city is covered in scaffolding because of organized crime isn’t a wild conspiracy theory buuuut if you want to understand why the average NY scaffolding project stays up for 495 days (!!!) there are some other reasons too… It’s expensive to install and cheap to leave up so a lot of buildings just don’t bother to take it down if there’s a chance they might need more repairs done soonish. This is shit because scaffolding makes sidewalks difficult to navigate (esp with a wheelchair or stroller) and reduces sunlight. This was a commission for @guardian 🏙️ Source: NYC Department of Buildings, April 2023 this is a bit cringe but what can I say, crusty men spark my creativity EID MUBARAK HABIBIS! I made this illustration way back in 2017 when it became clear that Trump was trying to reverse affirmative action at universities (the work of undoing rights can take a long time and shit, we need to take those early threats seriously). I wanted to ignore the opinion polling and look at the *impact* of affirmative action. Several states have banned these programs in the past. This happened in California in 1998 and when it did, Black and Hispanic enrollment at Berkeley College fell from 24% to just 13%. Since then, the gap between a fair world and the real one has just got wider. Over half of college-age Californians are Black or Hispanic but only 15% make it to Berkeley. This chart shows how much turnover there is in low wage jobs. But if you look a bit closer you’ll also see another story – one where machines are replacing people. I started to look at which jobs are disappearing and unsurprisingly it’s the roles that are most vulnerable to automation. Top of the list are cashiers which is a really concerning trend because a huuuuge 3.3 million people in the US work as cashiers (and a lot of them are women). But I’m still not sure this image was the best design. There are more bodies falling out of the bucket than falling into it, but it’s really hard for your eye to notice (right?). The fact that so many people come and go each year makes it hard to see the ways that the economy – and people’s lives – are quickly changing. ID: There’s a grey bucket labelled “cashiers in the US” set against a pink background. 60 brightly colored bodies are tumbling out of the bottom of the bucket and 57 bodies are pouring into the top of it. The caption explains that each body represents 10,000 cashiers. The source is annual data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
