Mona Chalabi Instagram – This chart shows how much turnover there is in low wage jobs. But if you look a bit closer you’ll also see another story – one where machines are replacing people.   I started to look at which jobs are disappearing and unsurprisingly it’s the roles that are most vulnerable to automation. Top of the list are cashiers which is a really concerning trend because a huuuuge 3.3 million people in the US work as cashiers (and a lot of them are women). But I’m still not sure this image was the best design. There are more bodies falling out of the bucket than falling into it, but it’s really hard for your eye to notice (right?). The fact that so many people come and go each year makes it hard to see the ways that the economy – and people’s lives – are quickly changing.  ID: There’s a grey bucket labelled “cashiers in the US” set against a pink background. 60 brightly colored bodies are tumbling out of the bottom of the bucket and 57 bodies are pouring into the top of it.
