I’m not their mom. I’m not their dad. I’m their sister and I get to love and guide them through life. Being a bonus parent is TOUGH…no one could ever add up to their parents. But these kiddos have shown me so much love, patience, grace, understanding, and appreciation! Helping to raise these two kiddos is the hardest but most rewarding job I will ever have. I’ve always said, “God meant for me to be a mama!”… little did I know, the journey would start a little sooner than expected! But luckily, I have had THE MOST AMAZING mama in the world to learn from! Because of her I can do this!

Mothers Day – this one hit hard! I’ve been DREADING the holidays. First it was Easter, then Dads Birthday, now Mothers Day, and on the 16th it will be Grays 17th birthday. A lot of firsts happening…and frankly…I HATE IT! I’m angry! I hold it all in pretty well…I’ve mastered the art of compartmentalizing. I may be 25… but I miss my mama so bad my heart hurts.

FUN FACT – Mama had her tubes tied after me and our sweet GrayBug came along 9 years later! WHAT A SURPRISE! And it was the greatest surprises we’ve ever received. I like to say that Gray got the ABSOLUTE BEST parts of my parents. He’s got a heart like no other. Humor that causes laughs to erupt. A smile that radiates the room. And hugs that can cure the worst sadness.

On this episode of @unlockedwithsavannah you get a behind the scenes look at the emotional challenge of having both parents in federal prison and the toll it is taking on both Grayson and I. @graysonchrisley
I actually get very emotional as Grayson opens up to me about just how hard this is and when I ask him what I can do to help make things easier he responds with, “you are doing everything you possibly can, but you can’t fix it – it’s impossible.”
The actual day to day struggle is far more difficult than most people realize. But it isn’t unique to just our family.
7.3 million children have at least one parent in Jail or Prison
Half of those in prison are parents to minors
You are 5 times more likely to commit a crime if your parents have been imprisoned.
You are 4.4 times less likely to have a high school diploma
6.6 times more likely to use illegal drugs
3.4 times more likely to be charged with a felony
70% more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression
The struggle and the emotional strain is on full display as Grayson and I have a very open and honest conversation about life with two parents in “the system”.
Criminal Justice reform and improving prison conditions isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue, it is about being humane and decent. It should not be divisive to provide safe and clean facilities that are free from mold, asbestos, lead, animal feces, etc. I have two parents living in these conditions, but this isn’t about two people, it is about the nearly two million people incarcerated across this country. Regardless of how you feel about those who are incarcerated across this nation we must remember these are humans. God calls each of us to be a light in the darkness and to serve and love ALL of His children. I want to be a voice for the voiceless and to help these two million souls along with all of their families and friends to know they are not alone. Our sins don’t define us and Grace is given not earned.

What a special @unlockedwithsavannah episode for me! When I first moved to Nashville, I decided that I really needed to find out for myself what I actually believed. I wanted to have a personal relationship with Christ and not just cling to the religious experiences of my parents and grandparents. I eventually found my way into a church here in Nashville and that is where I met Pastor @pwilson . His ability to connect with people and then use that connection to connect people to God was so unique and I truly experienced God though this man’s leadership and teaching. He helped me find my own personal walk with God and under his leadership I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior and it was him who baptized me.
I understand that those who are in church leadership must be held accountable, but I also know that it was Jesus who looked at the adulterous woman and the crowd who wanted to kill her and said that “he who is without sin should cast the first stone”.
As Christians it is so easy for us to try to take the place of God and become the Judge. That is a role reserved for God and God alone. Our job is to love. Jesus told us how the world would recognize that we were followers of His – “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 3:35.

Also, I just want to say, I am sorry if the church ever hurt you. That was people. Not God. In today’s world, we are so quick to judge, to tear down, and to punish people with our words. And the idea of cancel culture is really about isolating, someone and excommunicating them from community, from any form of acceptance or understanding. We actually make people feel like they are islands of loneliness.
I can speak first hand as to how it feels to be cancelled, my family was cancelled literally by a network and figuratively by so many that decided to sit in judgement rather than to respond with care or concern.
When God sent Jesus to this earth, he decided to send an angel to announce it to the world, and in Luke 2:10 the angels declared the news with these words, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”
The good news was always intended to be for ALL the people. Not just some people, not just the ones we like, not just the ones who are behaving in a manner we approve. Our job as Christians is not to sit in judgment, but to share the good news with ALL the people. EVEN THE ONES WHO HAVE BEEN CANCELED.
