I’m back with you Monday morning from 8.30am on @abcinmelbourne after a long family break, and I’ve got three things for you to consider and another three ingredient recipe coming your way very soon.

Marco the 14 month old Keeshond is on the chopping block for Addison’s 11th birthday party tonight.
For those who know of my … um … frustrations with this twinkly ball of fluff, can I emphasise it was not MY idea to make a likeness that would end up with a knife in it … that was all Addison. 😱
In truth, he’s turning out to be a very sweet dog – and an exceptionally sweet cake. I think Cora knows she dodged a bullet here …(BTW Pretty proud of the piping work on this one but black cakes are very hard to photograph!)

Scandalous, beautiful, hilarious, and impeccably coiffed.
His shows at @melbcomedyfestival have been a total smash: 5000 tickets sold in one week alone and sold out shows night after night.
The usual media outrage outlets did their worst, and @theprojecttv did what they did (🤷🏻♀️) but the edge of comedy will always remain razor sharp despite what the blunt minds of the arbiters of “taste” and windblown occupiers of the high moral ground try. Right to the end, it’s been a show brave enough to take us into the heart of family darkness, framed always by trauma and neglect, choked with dark laughter and lifted by translucent performances. Yet again, you start the episode, and then you don’t exhale til it’s over.
The final episode of @succession never missed. All the grand themes were there – the missing father, the dreadful mother, the sibling rivalry, vanity, ego, hurt, pathos and bathos. Perfect.
The little touches in this final episode were splendid too: Greg and the original cowbell he knocked off the table when he visited Logan’s apartment in the very first episode; Lady Caroline luring her children to Barbados not to support Roman, but so her grifter upper-class twit husband could try and con them into a barely legal investment; the torture of watching Shiv, Roman and Kendall come together in the kitchen in genuine joy and play, all the while knowing this communion could not possibly last; the video of Logan singing Irish ballads with his eldest son and the hangers-on, while the three kids watch – excluded, ignorant of this fun, so far from his company. What did Shiv say? “It was so warm in the light.”
In the end, Logan won. As he said, he always wins. And the win was the most awful one of all, because the patriarch’s success depended on his children never being raised with the maturity, independence and capacity to ever take him on and beat him. None of the kids were ever going to get the prize, and in the end it doesn’t really matter that Tom does (he’ll be canned by Matsson eventually) but the decision now permanently sets the course for the kids that was originally charted by their brutal parents: Shiv to become her mother as Logan-lite Tom eventually shrugs her off for a newer model; Roman to descend into lonely nihilism (still pining for Gerry with her drink of choice) and poor Kendall, with little more than billions to help him make sense of a world that has now forever shrunk to the size of his eternal childhood fears.

A big shout-out to our neighbourhood baker and roaster, @smallbatchroast and their baker @charliemduffy for winning Easter. I’m a hot cross bun devotee from my early 80s youth, rising on Good Friday at 5am to bake my own for a huge annual gathering of friends, because the only buns you could buy back then were from supermarkets. Then came @babkafitzroy and everything changed. I no longer have to make them because these bakers are way better than I could ever be. I still miss Dolcetti in West Melbourne and Marianna’s extraordinary brioche buns – but these beauties are a brilliant replacement.
All the key elements are there: the spice, the peel and the glaze. The bun has a great give to it and the cross is bloody genius: instead of that line of Clag that bakes into cement, they are clever lines of crisp croissant pastry. 👌

Castagne! Chestnut season is at its zenith, and I never got around to posting the soup I discussed with @mattscravat on @abcinmelbourne a few weeks ago. It’s utterly simple, but so rich and lovely. Ok – so peeling chestnuts is a bitch – do it while they’re hot in the water and wear gloves – but the rest is easy.
A few things:
* Don’t be tempted to use stock; water is enough.
* Check the lemon as you add it – you may not need three tablespoons.
