The year was 1971. The day was July 18th. With Maracanã full, the greatest player in football history played his last match for the Brazilian national team. There was no more suitable stage. When it was replaced, the iconic stadium was filled with silence, as if everyone lost their breath for a second. The match just stopped altogether. Players on the field watched as King Pelé said goodbye to 138,575 subjects taking an Olympic lap, amid tears and the certainty that his legacy had been fulfilled.

Em 1957, Edson assinava seu primeiro contrato profissional com o @SantosFC. Isso aconteceu depois de o menino impressionar o treinador, Luís Alonso Pérez (Lula), após atuar em 30 partidas como atleta amador pelo clube. O ex-jogador da Seleção Brasileira, Waldemar de Britto, foi quem levou Pelé para fazer testes na Baixada Santista. Era o início de uma grande história. O Rei fez 1363 partidas, sendo 1116 pelo Santos, e marcou 1282 gols, 1091 com a camisa alvinegra.

In 1957, Edson signed his first professional contract with @SantosFC. This happened after Pelé impressed the coach, Luís Alonso Pérez (Lula), after playing in 30 matches as an amateur athlete for the club. Former Brazilian national team player, Waldemar de Britto, was the one who took Pelé for trials in Baixada Santista. It was the beginning of a great story. O pessoal da Pelé Foundation vasculhou algumas fotos antigas e encontrou essa rara imagem do Rei depois de um amistoso contra o @realmadrid. Pelé sempre teve muita admiração pelo clube madrilenho, e inclusive recebeu muitas propostas para jogar com eles. Em entrevista, ele disse: “As pessoas que conhecem a história do futebol sabem que o Santos viajou muitas vezes para a Europa e não apenas isso. Sabem que venceu muitas vezes as grandes equipes da época. Não acredito que precisava jogar na Europa para provar alguma coisa. O futebol é muito diferente hoje. De qualquer forma, tive ofertas da Europa e preferi ficar em casa (…) Teria sido incrível jogar no Real, com tanta história… Mas não me arrependo de ter ficado e feito minha carreira no Santos”.

The folks at the Pelé Foundation dug through some old photos and found this rare image of the King after a friendly against @realmadrid. Pelé always had a lot of admiration for the Madrid club, and even received many proposals to play with them. In an interview, he said: “People who know the history of football know that Santos traveled to Europe many times and not only that. They know that he beat the big teams of the time many times. I don’t believe I needed to play in Europe to prove anything. Football is very different today. Anyway, I had offers from Europe and preferred to stay at home (…) It would have been amazing to play for Real, with so much history… But I don’t regret staying and making my career at Santos”.
