One of the worst parts of getting older is losing the artists that informed and helped create your youth. Every single person of every single walk of life loved Pee-Wee. I still remember how weird it was that a side character from one of the Cheech and Chong movies was in his own movie. I remember riding our skateboards across town to go see it and how in love we all were with it afterwards. And then, of course, the thousands of re-watches. Endlessly quoting it. And later turning my kids onto it who immediately loved it to the point where it was mandatory Halloween costume stuff and then they named their first dog Dottie. Thank you for the joy, Paul.

This is how my anxiety operates. This is how I lived my life for over 20 years. Interestingly, it was taking a break from life during Covid that forced me to look at it. The pandemic lockdown functioned as somebody pressing pause on a VCR and I had to look at the grainy footage — a single frame frozen of my life — for years as it was all held on pause. That long examination with no way back on the treadmill made me aware of this aspect of my character, and that I was running myself into the ground. Since then I don’t work nights or weekends. I take tons of trips with the family. And I’ve completely let go of the idea of perfection. It’s made my life and work better.
I attached the Fresh Prince’s Summertime to this post because it was what Instagram recommended I do. Who am I to question?
