Barrett Doss Instagram – When we talk about microaggressions, people almost always talk about “overreaction” and “hypersensitivity” too. So I chose to ignore that in this video because feelings are feelings, having to be “strong” has killed enough minorities, and if you want to talk about “sensitivity”, shout “Racist!” in a crowded room and see what happens.
Anyway. Microaggressions, over the long term, can cause a sort of “death by a thousand cuts”. It’s more than discomfort. They are demoralizing, sometimes painful, but CONSTANT reminders of who you are when juxtaposed against the white/male/hetero supremacist measuring stick of our culture. They suggest the inequity present in this country and the persistent negation of people’s pain and total humanity.
