Born in the Netherlands in 1923, Oma has seen growth, wars, change, joy, and everything in between. She fought Nazis, moved to a brand new country, learned a new language, raised children and grandchildren, started businesses, kept a farm, and became the best neighborhood Oma a community could ask for.
I am so lucky to be marrying into the family she built, and I had a blast celebrating her big, 1920’s themed day. Happy birthday Oma! We love you! ❤️

Ok, I officially apologize – this page will be a wildlife and Southern Africa travelgram for a good while. It’s not lost on me that I am privileged to travel, and I want to spend some time highlighting some of the incredible work that is happening in conservation in this part of the world. @elephantmoments is a great example of this kind of mission.
Last Sunday, we woke up at 5am to get to the Kapama game reserve in Hoedsprite, SA by 6:30. There we met Tiger, a man who has dedicated his life’s work to caretaking the rescued Jubalani herd. Elephants are animals that follow water, so when human development and industry encroaches on their watering holes, some African countries cull the population in their region. Sanctuaries like the one at Kapama provide support and land for families to thrive in peace.
Holding the gaze of an elephant is a soulful experience that I wish I could do everyday for the rest of my life, as crazy as that sounds. Ultimately, these animals deserve to be wild and free and protected, and I am so grateful for the people in our world who are making sure that happens in my lifetime.

Day 2 of our trip to @gorongosapark! Just so y’all know, I’m posting recaps of our trip for the travel obsessed, so they can get a sense of what the tourism industry looks like in Southern Africa. As a (YT) person from the west, I want to make sure to be respectful to communities, environments, and culture, and make sure my tourism dollars go to the right places, so here’s what I’ve learned:
1. We’re all familiar with the concept of traveling places where the US dollar goes further, and that’s true for the countries I visited this time around: South Africa and Mozambique. For trips like this one, a big chunk of your budget goes to the airfare, but like #destinations Thailand and Vietnam, once you arrive food and souvenirs are realistically inexpensive. Make sure to tip well and bargain and negotiate only when it feels necessary.
2. If you’re visiting wildlife, be sure to research the companies and their mission statements. It’s good to consider how their practices affect the natural lifecycles of these animals, and question if they’re helping or hurting the conservation of these species.
3. VISIT NATIONAL PARKS!
4. Safari drives are way more fulfilling if you let nature come to you, rather than pushing guides to take you/track exciting animals to spot.
5. Baboons are cold blooded and smart and will eat your toothpaste, take a 💩 on your bed, and come back and try to do it the next day. Be sure to LOCK all doors and windows where you’re staying.
