We all know her charm from 80’s hits like Chashme Badoor and Saath Saath, she is an accomplished painter, writer and director but continues to be fierce and full of life on screen. When I first met her on the set of @goldfishthefilm @deepti.naval was quiet in readings, she would ask the occasional question, mutter the lines so I could barely hear them, and smile at me lovingly. But as soon as the camera was rolling, she was a different person, assertive, full of the confusion and emotional layering of a mother losing her memory, after having lost her husband and not far from losing her daughter. She was full of fire and forgiveness and kept me on my toes during the shoot. She is a wonder to watch on screen.

Today’s @goldfishthefilm story.
It’s hard to see how @deepti.naval ‘s Sadhana and my Anamika could be mother and daughter, when we look so different. But that’s part of the story. Anamika is British born to a Caucasian father and rejects her ‘indianess’ in all kinds of ways while Sadhana has struggled to hold on to her roots in a foreign country. Both need to find parts of themselves that the other has. And they do it by arguing over a goldfish.

About my personal life during the shoot of @goldfishthefilm
It was my first film after becoming a mother, my partner couldn’t come as he was working, my nanny didn’t get a visa as Covid rules were strict and I was having to get a nanny locally in London which we had only interviewed on zoom and trying to acclimatise my daughter to her over ten days. It was the night before shoot, it was late, I was exhausted and my daughter was clinging to me like a koala, screaming, refusing to go near ‘Nanny ‘manda’ . I sat her down and said ‘Saf, I really, really want to do this film, it’s my first one in two years, and it means a lot to me. I promise I’ll be here every morning and every night for you, but in the day could you go with Nanny ‘manda?’ She went right to sleep after that and the first thing she said in the morning was ‘Where’s Nanny ‘manda?’🥰
My director, producer and the whole crew worked around my needs, getting the right help, limiting night shoots and providing a safe environment for my daughter while I worked. It doesn’t happen often on sets, and that kind of awareness not only helps mothers feel comfortable at work, but facilitates the best work out of us.

The backing.
My director @slight_diversion had spoken to me about @goldfishthefilm about 6 years ago. But of course he said god knows when we will find the money to make it and then it sat in waiting until he called out of the blue and said I found a producer called Amit Saxena and he wants to start shooting yesterday! @thesplendidfilms took this production on during Covid, when nobody was taking risks in film making. His wife Smita read the script of Goldfish and told him it’s gold. So he put his gold into it and we could make a picture.
And then the film was invited to @busanfilmfest where @anuragkashyap10 saw it and offered to support us to carry this film towards a release. So here we are, with 5 days to go…

My director @slight_diversion had spoken to me about @goldfishthefilm about 6 years ago. But of course he said god knows when we will find the money to make it and then it sat in waiting until he called out of the blue and said I found a producer called Amit Saxena and he wants to start shooting yesterday! @thesplendidfilms took this production on during Covid, when nobody was taking risks in film making. His wife Smita read the script of Goldfish and told him it’s gold. So he put his gold into it and we could make a picture.
And then the film was invited to @busanfilmfest where @anuragkashyap10 saw it and offered to support us to carry this film towards a release. So here we are, with 5 days to go…
