There’s so much about his work to love, his sense of intimate storytelling, the way emotion is not dictated by music or edit, but by the truth of the moment, the way he upturns expectation on its head. How does he do it? Well for @goldfishthefilm he shot with three cameras simultaneously, which means often the whole scene would be rolling in one long single take. He also only used natural lighting, lamps, the sun seeping through half opened curtains, a harsh bathroom light. And music? If you want to hear it in the film, it’s when a character presses play on a stereo, or the radio is switched on, or a tv is left running in the background. What does all this mean for actors? It spoils us. We are not told how to make the audience feel. We don’t need to wait long for scene set ups, we ‘feel’ the atmosphere of a place as it really is, and we perform the whole scene without having to worry about continuity or cuts. We lose ourselves in the moment. It’s rare and precious to have such an organic process on a film set, and I loved it.
