Kalki Koechlin Instagram – @slight_diversion was not only directing @goldfishthefilm he was also the DOP. And the co writer. There’s so much about his work to love, his sense of intimate storytelling, the way emotion is not dictated by music or edit, but by the truth of the moment, the way he upturns expectation on its head. How does he do it? Well for @goldfishthefilm he shot with three cameras simultaneously, which means often the whole scene would be rolling in one long single take. He also only used natural lighting, lamps, the sun seeping through half opened curtains, a harsh bathroom light. And music? If you want to hear it in the film, it’s when a character presses play on a stereo, or the radio is switched on, or a tv is left running in the background. What does all this mean for actors? It spoils us. We are not told how to make the audience feel. We don’t need to wait long for scene set ups, we ‘feel’ the atmosphere of a place as it really is, and we perform the whole scene without having to worry about continuity or cuts. We lose ourselves in the moment. It’s rare and precious to have such an organic process on a film set, and I loved it. Kalki Koechlin Instagram – The neighbourhood You remember ‘My beautiful laundrette?’ The star of that film Gordon Warnecke? He’s in @goldfishthefilm and of course our brilliant Nehru of ‘Rocket Boys’ @rajitkapurofficial and Bharti Patel of UK’s famous show ‘Doctors’. And Shanaya Rafaat known for her brilliance on stage. And the list goes on. How lucky are Sadhana and Anamika for having these excellent neighbours. The incredibly talented supporting cast in @goldfishthefilm brought the experience of the immigrant alive in the film. A bunch of Indians can be in the same room and not speak the same language, one might speak Hindi, another Tamil, or Gujarati or Bengali – that list is long – which is why so often the common language between Indians everywhere is English. In our film, ‘home’ means different things for each one of them, but ‘home’ is also how they recognise each other and depend on one another in a foreign country.
