Meet Suhani Dhanki Mody.
Suhani Dhanki Mody is a dancer and relative newcomer to Southall, London.
With a big family in India 🇮🇳 🇬🇧 it was hard at first to not be surrounded by generations of her loved ones.
However, she’s found a family of friends through Manch UK, a performance platform for South Asian dance that showcases the joyous heart of the Indian diaspora in the UK 👩🏽🍳 🏏 💃🏽

It’s been years I’ve left India, and while I may have just about found a home away from home, that one question never leaves us – ‘Where are you from?’. There’s so many answers to that one question. But there’s one truth, and that is that I am proudly Indian at heart, no matter where I am ♥️
Loved working with Ambika, who’s inspiring thoughts and pragmatic perspectives not only make her such a fine poetess, but also make for some of the best conversations and guidance!

Would that be where I come from or where I now live?
Does your innocent question seek
To undermine all that I achieve?
“But where are you really from?”
Is that where I was born or where I choose to die?
Does the truth of that answer
Render my whole life a lie?
“No, where do you come FROM?”
Would that be where lives my body or where lives my heart?
Is that for you the red line
That reassuringly sets us apart?
“Well you must know where you’re from?”
Would that be the place where I earn, or the one for which I yearn?
If I said I come from the same place as you
Would that make your stomach turn?
Why does where I come from
Bear any significance,
Why do you look at me
Through this minimising, monochromatic lens,
Why does the colour of my skin
Mask our human resemblance,
Why must my future be eclipsed
By my geographical past tense?
