Praying for everyone to make it out safely of Yellowknife with the out of control wildfires so close to town 🙏🏽 Razelle, Phezuta and I left last week after our hide camp was shut down early due to the heavy smoke making it dangerous for us to work and stay outside. We drove down to Santa Fe for Indian Market and were welcomed early by @ataumbimetals who has been such a great support in these stressful times. My dad and @isaacayiku10 made it out of town yesterday and it’s such a relief that my whole family is safe in Alberta. Tears coming down my face as I write this post hoping to have a home to come back to and that everyone makes it out safely with the 20 hours drive to Calgary. #yellowknife #denendeh #wildfires

This is my love Razelle Benally graduating from NYU Tisch with her MFA this past month! I’m extremely proud of her massive accomplishment not only did she survive the pendemic while in graduate school but she also had to work full time in two jobs as a writer on Dark Winds, and a director for the @showtime documentary series Murder in Big Horn while a full time student to be able to graduate. She was nominated by her faculty with the honour to lead them during the salute ceremony as the banner bearer for the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television. She was also recognized in the speech of the president of her school during the ceremony and we screamed way too loud in joy when we heard her name out loud! You can count on your fingers how many Indigenous people have graduated from this prestigious program and I’m so proud of her for honouring her gifts and working so hard for this accomplishment. I would also like to thank the faculty who saw her talents and pushed her to get even better! Congratulations my love for graduating with the class of 2023 💜💜 #nyutisch #nyuclassof2023

Often times many of us carry a shared love for adornment and art, but how many of us adorn ourselves while we create? We wear jewelry to feel empowered, protected, and sometimes because it inspires us. Other times it just becomes part of who we are and our everyday and we would feel naked without our favorite earrings or necklace on while we work. This photo is the first of a new series I’m working on where I profile an artist who carries a shared love of adornment, and the values that come with the creative process that forms the foundation of our artistic integrity and livelihood. Featured here to kick off this series is Wakeah Jhane, a Comanche and Kiowa Ledger artist known for her depictions of Indigenous life, motherhood, birth, family and womanhood. She is wearing caribou tufted vintage beaded studs with a dentalium shell drop along with a vintage Italian pink opal beaded necklace with silver beads and chain that will be available in my coming jewellery release. I got a chance to visit Wakeah in her home and exchange our love for smoked hide and what it means to uplift community. I had the privilege to step into her studio as she painted her new body of work for the Santa Fe Indian Market this August. She states “I wear jewelry while I work to adorn my body in a way that uplifts my spirit. It helps my soul feel good and provides me with the good energy I need to create and breathe life into my heart work.” #wakeahjhane #gwichinfinejewellery #indigenousart #vintagebeads #ledgerart #dentalium #swaia2023

On my way to tan hides for the next 10 days in the bush! I will completely be out of cell range so I won’t be able to respond to any calls, emails or DMs 🤓 I’m excited to sleep in a tent again, spend time with friends and elders while working hard on finishing some hides on the land. I’m going to miss my love @razellebenally and our shiba @phezuta Picture 2 & 3 by @thejamiestevenson #hidetanning #ontheland #gwichin
