“The revolution in Iran is not just about the Hijab, and it is definitely not about the persecution of Islam. Iranian people want freedom and equality. Iranian women have been facing severe gender apartheid for over 40 years. The Islamic Republic doesn’t actually care about Muslims, they don’t care about anyone! In fact, many people who identify as Muslims in Iran are also opposed to mandatory Hijab. These Muslims, along with Iranians from all genders, classes and creed have been standing shoulder to shoulder in their fight for freedom and democracy.
Mahsa Zhina Amnini’s death has become the catalyst for the very first Female led revolution in the history of humankind. These women are demanding for their right to choose! The freedom to choose is not just for women, this movement is a human rights movement. The people of Iran are demanding an end to their theocratic dictatorship, they are demanding an end to the violence and oppression of women, the LGBTQ+, for religious minorities, like Baha’is, Christians, Zoroastrians, and Jews, and for ethnic minorities like Baloochis, Afghans, and Kurds. The people of Iran, including Muslims are demanding a true democracy and liberty for all!
We must stand with the people of Iran, we must stand with the women of Iran, because just as women in Iran are fighting for their freedom to choose, so are the women here in America! If we choose not to stand with the women of Iran, the women of Kurdistan and Afghanistan. Who will stand with us when it is our turn? Even here in America Women, minorities, and the LGBTQ+ have been systematically losing their rights. Their fight is our fight, and our fight is their fight! Woman, Life, Freedom… Zan Zendegi Azadi!”
If you are an American citizen, please make sure to vote. Nov 8 is the last day to vote. Choose progressive candidates who care about human rights and Women’s right to choose. Don’t be fooled by religious fundamentalists the way Iranians were fooled by religious fundamentalists in 1979. Staying in alignment with the truth means getting very curious about the sensations in our body and building the relationship with ourselves so strongly that our discernment can begin to guide us. Rather than out traumas guide us.
Having strong discernment is not judgmentalness, it’s radical self compassion. Knowing who is dangerous and to be kept safe from, is wisdom.
