Adam Shankman Instagram – I spent much of my childhood in fear. I was teased, picked on, bullied and beaten up, because I was just myself. I was afraid of my family disliking, disowning and abandoning me if they knew who I actually was. I lied about everything to survive because I somehow “knew” what I was was bad and wrong. As a result, my life nearly ended because I needed drugs and alcohol to numb the terror. To quiet the voices. To be anything but who I was because who i was was not worth love and happiness or joy. Because I am gay.
Nothing I believed was true. My family loves me unconditionally because I actually am who I am and live authentically now. When I came out, my life actually began. I no longer have to lie, and live with soul shattering shame. My friends love me because I’m a good and loyal friend. My work is all about love. Love of family, love of self. The love that comes from being authentic and accepting yourself, accepting others and being decent and kind and living a life of integrity.
I wish for a world free of prejudice and shaming. Of discrimination. I wish for a world driven by love and kindness. I am an optimist and believe in people but it’s only because I now believe in myself. I wish for everyone the same with all my heart.
