Arjun Mathur Instagram – Now here’s a throwback.. from my youthful days as an Assistant Director 👶🏽
Early 2005 – Somewhere within a mustard-field, artificially created overnight, in the centre courtyard of a fort in rural Punjab.
Look closely and you will spot Aamir Sir (squatting, back to cam), @sharmanjoshi, @kunalkkapoor, @atulkulkarni_official, @worldofsiddharth, D.O.P. @binodkpradhan, Director @rakeyshommehra’s head (behind the skimmer) and our first A.D., the Late Mick Ward (R.I.P.)
Look closer, and you’ll see me running around in my standard ponytail and utility-jacket from those days.
Here, we are filming the final scene of the film – where the spirits of our present-day revolutionaries visit Bhagat Singh in his childhood. In a great cameo, Rakeysh sir himself played Bhagat Singh’s father in the scene.
I remember one evening at this very location, where we had spent about a week by now, filming various scenes and a song – just minutes after wrap was announced (a very busy time for production and direction teams), Rakeysh sir pulled all the A.D.s away from our respective active nightmares, huddled us all in a circle in the parking area (literally arms across each other’s shoulders) and said –
“Now I know that nothing is easy right now and things are feeling extremely hard and difficult. But hang in there, because what we are doing here is very special and extremely important. You will see. And you will be proud.”
And how right he was.
#RangDeBasanti will be forever special. Forever relevant. Forever ALIVE. It makes me so proud to have been a part of it’s creation.
