I would have never have dreamed that hitting my local track days just a few short years ago would lead to today, racing in the China Touring Car Championship series for the Dong Feng Honda factory team! It has been a few years since I have been to Shanghai so I spent the last two days getting over jet lag and seeing old friends. Now it’s time to get down to business. Today I met my teammates Jack Young and Martin Xie who will help get me up to speed in the next two days of practice. I also got acquainted with our crew of mechanics and engineers from JAS and Macpro as they walked me through this new FL5 Civic Type R TCR car. This thing is a beast and I am looking forward to getting it on this world class track tomorrow! More to updates to come!

We had one session but had to do a bunch of technical things which ate into my track time so when I finally got out there I was a bit too eager on the brand new tires and had a little spin in turn three. In the end I only got about 4 laps which was not enough time for me to get a good pace or rhythm going. This is a new car and a new track so my mind was busy and couldn’t focus on just the driving. Although I spent the last month training on my home simulator, it’s not the same as being here for real. Also I was not prepared for how hot it was going to be in the car. The thick race suit and no ventilation in the car felt like I was driving a sauna around the track. We will be installing the cool shirt system tomorrow so hopefully that will help. Second I began to trust myself and the car more and was able to bring my time down from yesterday by 8 seconds. I am much more relaxed in the car now and waaay more comfortable with the track. Considering I am the only driver who hasn’t driven this track before and in a new car AND one of the oldest drivers here, I am happy with my progress. Race 1 complete! Not the result I wanted. Had a really bad start because I opted not to use the launch control system as it is very complicated and I did not have time to practice enough with it. So I got jumped by a couple cars at the start. A full course yellow that lasted half the race meant I couldn’t chase my way back so was only able to move up one position. Tomorrow’s race will require a bit more aggression from the get go. My Dong Feng Honda teammates Martin Xie and Jack Youg however kicked some major ass with a 1 2 finish.
