Na época, Pelé disse: “Desejo me aposentar como um campeão”, e seu desejo se concretizou. Em 28 de agosto de 1977, vestindo a camisa verde e shorts brancos do New York Cosmos,, Pelé derrotou o Sounders, de Seattle, conquistando o título da Liga Norte Americana de Futebol (NASL). Nesse confronto, o lendário atleta viu sua equipe emergir vitoriosa com um placar de 2 a 1.

More than four decades ago, on this day, King Pelé concluded his influential career as a “trailblazer” of soccer in the United States. He brought his journey to an end at Civic Stadium (now known as Providence Park), a baseball stadium hastily adapted for soccer, with a capacity of 27,400 spectators, even though it attracted a crowd of 35,548 fans. On this occasion, Pelé played his final official soccer match.

At the time, Pelé stated, “I wish to retire as a champion,” and his wish came true. On August 28, 1977, clad in the green jersey and white shorts of the New York Cosmos, Pelé defeated the Sounders from Seattle, securing the title of the North American Soccer League (NASL). In this contest, the legendary athlete saw his team emerge victorious with a score of 2-1.
