Today marks 21 years of Peter’s release ‘UP’. The album revealed itself to be another deeply personal statement, with birth and death being near-constant themes. ‘A book-ends record’ Peter called it at the time. There are contributions from the likes of Peter Green, Danny Thompson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Daniel Lanois, the Black Dyke Band, Peter’s daughter Melanie and the late, great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

The North American i/o tour is now underway, with lots of new songs and plenty of old favourites too. Biko has been a key song in the live set over many tours and here it is from 2011, with the New Blood orchestra.
‘… the new songs have an ephemeral, elusive beauty, though in their live incarnation they took on greater urgency from the ensemble’s stellar playing’ – @phillyinquirer on the show at @wellsfargocenter

‘Us’ is 31 today. On its release, it was, arguably, Peter’s most personal record to date. The album continued his well-established motif of mixing high technology with decidedly analogue contributions from musicians from West Africa, Egypt and Armenia. Reunited with Daniel Lanois as co-producer, Peter extends the hand of collaboration to Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, Brian Eno, Peter Hammill and Sinead O’Connor.
The North American tour kicks off today, Quebec we hope you’re ready!
PG and the band in action captured by @brightandloud keep the photos coming!

“The music began with this meditative, repeated sequence and the essence of all these sounds was trying to create a sensual palette. With the work that @buffwerk’s been doing on the immersive mix too, you’re getting this sense of being touched in many places and it should be a place just to drift off into. That was my aim.” – PG
“The Drop has a melody that I had actually proposed for the Dome project but it had been rejected, but I always liked it and so I thought I’d do a lyric to it. It’s of the book-ends approach lyrically; it’s the tail end that you are looking at there. A parachute drop without knowing where you are going to land!” – PG

“In the center of the world’s largest city lies Panopticon Prison. Its design, sin, and corruption fused with new technology and flesh created a monstrous cyborg that hungered for information. As its tentacles reach farther and farther, the monster turns the entire city into its parts, transforming all living creatures into heartless surveillance cyborgs.”

On today’s new moon, Peter releases the Dark-Side Mix to ‘Love Can Heal’, which was primarily recorded at @realworldstudios, but also features live elements from Linnea Olsson (cello and vocal) and Jennie Abrahamson (vocal), ‘wonderful musicians’, recorded in Toronto during the Rock, Paper, Scissors tour. Their two voices are joined by those of Melanie Gabriel and also Ríoghnach Connolly on lead vocals creating ‘a warm, soft vocal blanket that surrounds you.’
“My workflow is completely personal, rooted in my own feelings and experiences. With Panopticom, the song struck a deep chord with me. It resonated with my constant sense of being watched and watching others while navigating the world of social media.” – Lamson
@lamson.ai ‘s official video for Peter’s ‘Panopticom (Dark-Side Mix)’ will be out tomorrow!

“With Love Can Heal, I could see my images coming up when I was hearing it so you begin to home-in and that’s how it starts. I love artists who take risks and Peter’s always chopped and changed and I like to do that too with my work and you know it doesn’t just rest on this one thing.” – @antonymicallef
@johnmetcalfeband, who’s done some wonderful work on i/o has his own album ’Tree’ out today on @realworldrec.

I’m always appalled at the ease with which anyone can get hold of a weapon which can slaughter many, many people in a very short space of time. This has to stop, it has to be crazy and I really support @artistforaction’s efforts to get some proper, serious form of gun control. – PG

“I was listening to a few of the songs and it’s interesting because it’s like putting on clothes and going ‘oh, this suits me’ or ‘that doesn’t suit me’.” – @AntonyMicallef
