I’m so excited to announce that the 🐺 WOLVES 🐺 Photo Exhibit will be opening on November 4th at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Wyoming @wildlifeartjh The exhibit explores the relationship between humans and wolves through my photographs of wild wolves in Yellowstone and the High Arctic. This is my first exhibit of any kind and I couldn’t be more thrilled and I’m so grateful for the opening to be in Jackson Wyoming. If you’re in the area in November, please come to the opening or stop by the museum through April 2023 to see the exhibit.
I will post more in the coming weeks leading up to the opening. For now, put the weekend of November 4th-6th on your calendar and join for ‘Wolves and Waffles’ + my opening talk on Friday, a wold panel discussion on Saturday and the kids program on Sunday.
I hope to see you there.

This drowned bison fed a grizzly bear for several days before a wolf, photographed using a camera trap, moved in to take advantage of an easy meal. Known as Mr. Blue for his steely blue-gray coat, this wolf outlived five mates over the course of his life. National Geographic Explorer Ronan Donovan captured this photo in Yellowstone National Park.
Created by National Geographic Society and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, “Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan” displays images and videos—highlighting the contrast between wolves that live in perceived competition with humans and wolves that live without human intervention. You have one more month to see the exhibition in Jackson Hole, on view now through April 30, 2023!
“My life is dedicated to giving social animals a voice within the human world.” @ronan_donovan has dedicated his life to raising awareness about wolves and other social mammals through his work as a conservation photographer. ”Wolves are social mammals. People are social mammals too. We came from the same landscape that these animals evolved from. We share many of the same social and community behaviors. When we look closely at a wolf pack, we can see ourselves reflected.”

In this photograph by National Geographic explorer Ronan Donovan the Mollie’s pack investigates grizzly bear tracks in Yellowstone’s Pelican Valley. The only pack that remains from the wolf reintroduction in 1995, the Mollie’s pack was originally called the Crystal Creek pack. It was renamed in memory of Mollie Beattie (1947-1996), former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and an instrumental figure in the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone.

We’re almost ready to announce the next speaker of the @vital.impacts Student Speaker Series, but we need your help!
Here are 3 clues about the speaker:
1) He is a wildlife biologist turned conservation photographer
2) He embeds for months at a time to capture imagery of fellow social mammals such as gorillas and wolves.
3) His current project has him frequenting the Arctic!
Who is this member of the pack? We want to see your best guess. This mystery speaker will be revealed tomorrow!

Hunts in the Arctic often last for hours. National Geographic Explorer Ronan Donovan captured this photo on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. This photo shows a standoff between wolves and muskoxen which ended after six hours; the muskoxen held higher ground and successfully defended themselves until the wolves gave up.

The wolves in Yellowstone can still be hunted and trapped when they leave the safety of the park’s boundary during the winter months. As a result, they are shy in comparison to wolves that aren’t hunted by humans and it can be challenging to take photos of them. @ronan_donovan uses camera traps to be able to capture images of wolves moving through their home ranges.

These photographs were taken by @ronan_donovan who we are so pleased to have as a speaker for our @vital.impacts Student Speaker Series!
Ronan has spent a lot of time among wolves. He’s witnessed how wolves are powerful, intelligent, social mammals that have evolved to live in family structures similar to humans and he hopes that his photos will provide people with a better understanding of these often-misunderstood animals. He poses the question, “What if modern humans didn’t have to live in conflict with the natural world? What if the wolf was just a wolf and not only the myths we’ve created? We have lived alongside wolves, even bringing them into our homes, far longer than we’ve lived in conflict.”

I was asked to write an article about wolves for @modernhuntsman Volume 10. I chose to share my personal perspective on the human-wolf relationship surrounding my experience with Arctic wolves.
I open the article with this quote:
“Nature is not more complicated than you think,
it is more complicated than you can think.”
– Frank Edwin Egler, Plant Ecologist
From @modernhuntsman:
As always, we have a wide variety of story styles and topics in this issue, but our cover story is an in-depth look into the controversy surrounding the managements of wolves in the US, told from the perspectives of Nat Geo Explorers @rob_g_green and @ronan_donovan. You don’t want to miss this issue, and can reserve a copy at the link in our bio, or on our website.

Behind the scenes! The National Geographic team is currently installing the traveling photography exhibition Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan. The National Museum of Wildlife Art will debut this exhibition next week. The exhibition features Donovan’s stunning images and videos of wild wolves in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Ellesmere Island in the high Canadian Arctic. Since 2014, National Geographic Explorer and photographer Ronan Donovan has examined the relationship between wild wolves and humans in order to better understand the animals, our shared history, and what drives the persistent human-wolf conflict.
The exhibition, created by National Geographic Society and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, will display images and videos—highlighting the contrast between wolves that live in perceived competition with humans and wolves that live without human intervention.

@ronan_donovan sets out to find descendants of Mr. Blue (755M). This famous wolf is related to the 31 wolves reintroduced to @yellowstonenps in 1995. Mr. Blue started his own packs and helped to increase the wolf population within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem @jackwolfskin #jackwolfskin #welivetodiscover Yellowstone National Park
From an early age, @ronan_donovan connected with nature and it became his escape from the confusion of modern society. Through his camera lens, he tells the story of animals that might otherwise go untold and advocates for conservation.

I’ll be in San Luis Obispo this Monday, 10/24, to give an NG Live talk. It’s open to the public. What does it mean to be a human? We are, at our core, social mammals. We build relationships, communicate, reproduce, establish territories, and adapt to shrinking resources. In these ways, we’re no different than other social mammals. Chimpanzees, wolves, and gorillas are among the most charismatic of the mammals we know. We identify with them as species, groups, and even as named individuals. They’re also under threat. Join biologist-turned-photographer Ronan Donovan as he talks about his work in documenting these animals and what we, as fellow social mammals, can learn from them. San Luis Obispo County, California
It’s game time – welcome to Two Truths & a Lie! The @vital.impacts speakers have had some crazy adventures during their careers.
According to @ronan_donovan, he:
1) Was born at home in a cabin his parents built.
2) Stayed awake for 46 hours tracking wolves hunting.
3) Went to the moon.
Two of these are true, one is made up! Can you guess which is the lie? Watch our story to see if you got it right!
