Amber Tamblyn Instagram – My favorite idiot put a record out yesterday melding his unique blend of standup comedy and poetry and it blew me away when I listened to it. What kind of dumb dumb would ever think to do such a thing— to break you wide open with one liner jokes and sentences of poetry unlike anything you’ve ever heard before—and expect to be taken seriously? Who among us had Comedian Poet on their life goals bingo card? Derrick Dummy C. Brown, that’s who. I think I’ve waited most of my adult life for the rest of the world to know what I know, to fall in love with Derrick’s unique brilliance as a writer and performer. With his debut album, A CLOSE SHAVE WITH HEAVEN, I hope you all do. Derrick and I have toured the country over (mostly by motorcycle) and I’ve witnessed first hand what his magic can do, whether he’s performing in a dive bar, a lifeguard station on a random beach (pictured) or in front of a crowd of thousands opening for The Cold War Kids, Eugene Mirman, or some young stud named David Cross. Derrick has been the best kept secret of every comedian and every poet I know. So now it’s your turn to make the dumbest decision of your life and do something you never thought you would: buy a comedy poetry album. Derrick’s record is out now and you can stream on Spotify, but buying it would mean so much more for an artist who has dedicated his entire life to this art form with his singular sense of humor and heartbreak.
