This week at #TIFF was a dream come true. It’s always been on my bucket list to tell a Vietnamese Québécois story on the big screen and to be part of a film based on such a celebrated novel by @kimthuylythanh fulfilled a deep need as a storyteller. Not only is it the first of its kind for this community, but walking in her mother’s shoes helped me understand my own mom’s journey more deeply. In the process of shooting this film last year, I too became a first time mom.
To add to this, the most magical part of the night besides watching the film with my RU family and best friends, was being dressed in a custom traditional Vietnamese Áo Dài khăn đóng created by @thainguyenatelier. Thai not only made me feel beautiful in this dress (as a 8month postpartum mama, I was nervous about getting back on a red carpet 🤷🏻♀️), but he made me feel pride in representing and celebrating my culture. I’m holding onto everything I can that is a part of my Vietnamese heritage (language, food, customs) and wearing this beautiful Áo Dài khăn đóng certainly is an important part of it.
I’m writing this as my sister union in the US is on strike, and acknowledge that we’re going through an extremely difficult time right now. I’m thankful that SAG-AFTRA allowed me to promote this film (under a UDA contract). I’m proud to have worked on my first Canadian film, which was entirely funded by the Canadian & Quebec government agencies @la.sodec @telefilm_canada @amalga.prod @imminafilms @tiff_net
