Yet so many shelters are run in such a way no improvements are done or it takes years for one simple idea to be heard and then more years to be implemented. The red tape and politics needs to be removed from the shelter system and forward thinking compassionate doers need to be the ones running things. The list of improvements that are simple and easy in shelters like PUTTING DRAIN COVERS ON THE DRAINS AT THE @sbcountyanimalcare SO THE DOGS CAN HAVE BLANKETS is one example of how things could be better for dogs. Or dividing the play yards so more dogs and volunteers can be out at once, providing sail shades and pools in all the yards. These we have offered to help @laanimalservices with and have but yet the dividing of the yards still lingers. Simple, easy things that show respect and love to the dogs who have been repeatedly failed by society is the very least we could do especially since so many never even get out alive yet people holding positions with the power to make these SIMPLE changes continue to do nothing. Today I celebrate 1 year off of booze. Off of the special sauce. The mommy juice. No hangovers. More sleep. Remembering in detail what the night was like before I fell asleep. Feeling feelings I didn’t want to feel because they were scary and getting through it just a teeny bit taller. Getting diagnosed with adhd and thinking huh… maybe there’s a better way to cope with it than 2-? Drinks to fall asleep. Having fun. Laughing til my ribs ache without alcohol. And yes. Sometimes being bored and just going to bed. Sleeping through the fomo. Singing and performing live at night without a drink. Listening to my daughter being more present with her. Even when she yells at me, without taking the edge off. Being on the edge. And feeling the feelings. Knowing they would pass. Learning to like being present (most of the time) and not needing to hide from it. Sometimes pausing before I react and even, very often, consulting a higher power to guide me through all the shenanigans of my life and not being mad about it. Reaching out to other non drinking humans and being amazed at how many there are out there. And how willing they are to hear my deep dark scary truth and hold my hand and just listen. It all started with @elizaaclarkw telling me she had 16 days and me thinking wow. If she can do it. I can. Ahhh. I love you friend. thank you for being my trudging buddy and to all you sexy sober (and non sober) friends who’ve guided me and held me up ODAAT. This time I would refuse. I wanted to have the luxury of many people in the world who can just turn it off with ease. Many people can’t imagine it happening to them because honestly, it never will. I was determined to see what that space felt like for once, I would cover my ears and not let in the outside. I knew it wasn’t possible because when some people hate the outside it doesn’t matter what’s on the inside even if what’s in there looks like them. So today I will cry, I will be depressed, I will curse, I will be outraged, I will want to burn some shit up, I will be in agony, I will let my heart break for his family, I will moan with his tenor harmony from my own experience that is every black man that’s ever called for the safety of the arms of mamma, I will inaudibly scream. But somewhere in the wrestling between the moon and the sun for the right to deliver light as if one is good and the other is evil, in that hour, I will get quiet, then I will be still, I will weep, and then I will pray.. and with the morning light, no matter who tried to dim it… I will get up and I will fight on!
