Shiona Turini Instagram – Black Excellence 🖤 I like to say going to Hampton university was the best decision I didn’t make for myself. I was desperate to go to fashion school but my mother had other plans. So off to Virginia I went to get a “real” degree. Lucky for me that campus was like a fashion show in itself. In fact, the first stage I styled for was the Miss HU Fashion Show. For electives I studied the history of costume design made gowns out of newspapers (swipe to see). Hampton even helped me to secure my first internship at Yves Saint Laurent. My time at an HBCU empowered me in ways I am eternally grateful. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that experience. Which is why I was so proud to be a part of @ups @nyfw program awarding 3 HBCU alumni 50k in grants and the platform to show their collections during Fashion Week. So many creative designers submitted applications it was hard to choose. I was so proud watching these talented and tenacious black women work. Thank you @thebrandlabel @__chelsea.g @undracelestenewyork for sharing your gifts with us. I cannot wait to see where you go from here.
