Hi folks I’m pleased to share with you my next chapter in the AJFA saga. I’ve had such a great time addressing the challenge of these songs. As this project continues, I’m feeling a little more freedom in creating the parts that fit these blazing compositions. The day has come. @metallica ‘s iconic thrash album “…And Justice For All” doesn’t have any bass on it. It’s not hard to explain why I love it so much in spite of this obvious shortcoming: I listened to it at blistering volume in my brother’s car on the way to high school almost every day of my freshman year. I fell in love with metal, and it’s a huge part of why I learned to play music. My first band, my first recording experience, my first shows, my first aspirations to do music for the rest of my life-all metal. Very metal. I’ve been returning to my roots this year, and getting back to this genre has been keeping my hands in shape for this tour. I lost track of Metallica‘s development a couple of albums after this one… The rock ‘n’ roll approach of load and reload didn’t land with me like justice and the black album did. But listening back now I am struck by how deep into Prog rock this album and song can get. Shifting, odd time signatures, tempo, and feel changes… And this part took me a minute to get my brain around for certain. Essentially coming out of the solo they shift the entire phrase by an eighth note. You can hear how the transition back into the verse riff is just slightly different from every other one in the song, and they get back the eighth note they gave away. Your friend and mine @travisvancemusic introduced me to the ripping album “Brain Pain” by the Boston band @fouryearstrong a few years back. The album is absolutely crushing and it kicks off with this White Whale of a tune-lyrical, melodic, unpredictable, haunting…and when it gets going IT GETS GOING. I’ve been hacking at this tune on and off for a year or so, trying different basses, fingerings, phrasings and tunings, and I finally got it playable.
