Today we reflect on another of Steve Schapiro’s shots from his collection of iconic Bowie images created in 1975.
Rather cryptically and in typically enigmatic fashion, Bowie has scrawled “ADDRESS UNKNOWN” on the mirror. What do you reckon that’s all about then?

PIN UPS ALBUM IS FIFTY TODAY
“Singing old songs he loved…” *
As mentioned here last week, today (19th October) marks the 50th anniversary of David Bowie’s 1973 album of cover versions, Pin Ups.
When originally released, the David Bowie/Ken Scott produced LP was preceded by the only single from Pin Ups, Sorrow, which reached #3 on the UK chart. Pin Ups itself entered the UK album chart at #1 on the strength of pre-orders alone.
Joining Bowie on the sleeve for Justin de Villeneuve’s extraordinary photograph is Twiggy, name-checked earlier the same year on Aladdin Sane for Drive-In Saturday: “She’d sigh like Twig the Wonder Kid”. The image here is an alternative shot to the one used.
The photo session was shot in Paris for Vogue magazine, but, at Bowie’s request, it was used for the Pin Ups cover instead. Bowie persuaded de Villeneuve that the album would have a considerably wider distribution than the magazine.
Here’s the note from the back cover where Bowie explained the Pin Ups concept :
+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +
These songs are among my favourites from the ’64–67′ period of London.
Most of the groups were playing the Ricky-Tick (was it a ‘y’ or an ‘i’?) – Scene club circuit (Marquee, eel pie island la-la)
Some are still with us. Pretty Things, Them, Yardbirds, Syd’s Pink Floyd, Mojos, Who, Easybeats, Merseys, Kinks.
Love-on ya!
Bowie x
+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +
Alan York and Jason Draper have pointed us at their in-depth piece which includes a track-by-track look at the album over on Dig! https://www.thisisdig.com/feature/pin-ups-david-bowie-album/ (Linktree in bio)

A REALITY TOUR KICKS OFF 20 YEARS AGO TONIGHT
“Welcome to Reality…”
The first leg of David Bowie’s A Reality Tour proper commenced twenty years ago today on 7th October 2003 at the Forum Copenhagen in Denmark.
A Reality Tour played at venues worldwide into the summer of 2004, and at well over 100 shows it became the longest of Bowie’s career.
Did you attend any of the concerts? If so, what are your memories of the tour?
The images here were taken by @BlamSnap at rehearsals in Brussels in Belgium a few days earlier, while the Reality album was still at its peak position of #3 on the UK album chart.
Speaking of Reality, Jason Draper celebrated its 20th anniversary with this piece over on ThisIsDig!: https://www.thisisdig.com/feature/reality-david-bowie-album-story/ (Linktree in bio)

SORROW SINGLE IS FIFTY TODAY
“You’re out there playing your high class games of sorrow…”
As you know, next week marks the 50th anniversary of Bowie’s #1 album Pin Ups, originally released 19th October 1973.
Just one single was issued from the album in the UK, a version of The McCoys’ Sorrow, which later enjoyed wider recognition via The Mersey’s rendition.
Bowie’s superb stab at the song reached #3 in the UK and it also gave him his first #1 anywhere in the world when it hit the top spot in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
Following mono adverts of the Pin Ups sleeve advertising Sorrow in this week’s music press fifty years ago, variations of our main image (taken by @therealmickrock) were used in the promotion of Sorrow, as you can see from the second slide, including three UK versions of the sheet music.
The sweet surprise all those years ago was another cover, Bowie’s sublime version of Amsterdam on the B side of Sorrow…more of which soon.

STAGE ALBUM IS 45 TODAY
“The boy in the bright blue jacket, jumped up on the stage” *
STAGE, the recorded document of the ISOLAR 2 tour, or, as it was known at the time: The 1978 World Tour, was finally released on this day in 1978 (29th September), following what must have been the longest advertising campaign for any Bowie album.
There have been various iterations of STAGE since its original release, with ever expanding versions being issued in 1991, 2005 and then again in 2017.
Do you have a favourite version?
* No, we’re not colour-blind. The green jacket in our illustration was originally blue, blue…electric blue.

NATIONAL ALBUM DAY TODAY IN THE UK
“…popular musics and aftershocks…”
With the focus on the 1990s, today is National Album Day in the UK.
We thought we’d open it up worldwide and ask if you have a favourite of the five solo studio albums Bowie released in that decade?
In the unlikely event that you’re unaware of Bowie’s oeuvre from the period, here it is in order of release…
1993 – Black Tie White Noise
1993 – The Buddha Of Suburbia
1995 – 1. Outside
1997 – Earthling
1999 – ‘hours…’
FOOTNOTE: While we have focused on the solo albums from the 90s, feel free to mention 1991’s Tin Machine II if that’s your personal favourite. Previous polls have suggested it might not be.
