Michael Gambon 1940-2023 A brilliant actor, a wonderful man. I was lucky enough to work with him in three films, two of them as his sidekick. Pictures 1 and 2 at the base camp trailers of Squanto, A Warrior’s Tale, directed by Xavier Koller, as I will always think of him, dancing a merry jig to amuse my son. Pictures 3 and 4 from Open Range, 2003, directed by Kevin Costner. I mourn his passing, but celebrate his life’s work. A true inspiration, spreading light and joy to those he worked with. RIP Michael

Washington DC The magnificent Washington Monument, 1855, built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk to evoke the timelessness of civilizations (pictures 1&2). And yes, I can guess the timeless preoccupation of the giggling boys photographing it in picture 3.

Bill Kenwright 1945-2023 Actor, Theatre director and producer. Chairman of Everton FC. As an actor he played Gordon Clegg on Coronation Street in the 1960’s, continuing as a director and producer of hundreds of theatre productions throughout the UK. He always tried to make theatres as full and vibrant as the football terraces he loved so much as a fan. Football, and especially Everton (the ‘other’ famous Liverpool club) continued to be his abiding passion. He became Chairman of the club in 2004, remaining so through thick and thin until his death. A larger than life and often controversial figure, but always a loyal, passionate fan, a staunch and stubborn local-lad-made-good in an era of sportswashing corporate and nation-state ownership. RIP Bill. “…a true scouse powerhouse, and passionate advocate of our city. What a life! What a legacy! “ Liverpool City Council. “….the city that gave us The Beatles and two major football teams also bred a unique impresario…..our business will be dimmer now he is gone.” Ian McKellen
