Actor, Theatre director and producer. Chairman of Everton FC.
As an actor he played Gordon Clegg on Coronation Street in the 1960’s, continuing as a director and producer of hundreds of theatre productions throughout the UK. He always tried to make theatres as full and vibrant as the football terraces he loved so much as a fan.
Football, and especially Everton (the ‘other’ famous Liverpool club) continued to be his abiding passion. He became Chairman of the club in 2004, remaining so through thick and thin until his death.
A larger than life and often controversial figure, but always a loyal, passionate fan, a staunch and stubborn local-lad-made-good in an era of sportswashing corporate and nation-state ownership.
