BOYSENBERRY TECH UNiVERSiTY … THE BOOK ….the year is 1987 …. “The smell of concession stand popcorn & jalapeño slices smeared under bleachers as rubber sneakers squeak on the yellowish hard wood floors. Applewood cedar oak scented fire logs burn smoke of the school’s chimney winds gusts thru the cracks, rattling the metal ball bearings of the auxiliary basketball gym doors… (Camera 4 pans) A worn red truck pulls up to the side of the gymnasium. Dirt kicks up from the unfinished pavement. This school does not look like much. A banner hangs off the side of the building: BOYSENBERRY TECH UNiVERSiTY SCHOOL BASKETBALL GYM – as the translucent blue hue clouds quickly pass the moon lit sky of night (outside camera 4 pan to inside to camera 5) Inside — the stadium is ELECTRIC! Crowds cheer wildly! Foam fingers reading “we’re number 2” are held up. Nachos and soda flies into the air. 10 men in short shorts run across the screen. On the sidelines stands — a man dressed in full women’s sports coat, suit skirt, basketball shoes and a blonde wig, chewing WAY too much bubble gum — it’s ……. COACH CARLSON! A whistle is blown. COACH CARLSON: “Now you listen to me, this game is EVERYTING to me. You hear me. EVERYTHING. If I could reach inside all of each of you and control you like wooden puppets, I would. So you listen word for word exactly to what I say, when I say it and we. will. win. Are we clear? Spit fills up the lens as he yells. The rest of the team are young guys — they look horrified and… way too young to be in college.
