Macca & the Moose* I’ve posted about the fabulous day at LIPA but they just sent me this picture… This was before I told him (and any one else listening) that one of my claims to fame was not the trinkets on my shelf but the fact that my father, Peter Beavan, was playing on his Sgt Pepper album! It was a very special moment on a wonderful day. I always liked The Beatles – my first introduction to ‘modern’ music and I still like the music now. I am thrilled to be connected to LIPA as well as my other educational establishments! * ‘Moose’ – my favourite nickname @lipaliverpool
Really looking forward to this! Looks like a fun day once I have gotten over my nerves. Billie Temple has helped me put together a slide show (well, Billie did it all really) to hopefully entertain, show the variety that is costume design and pass on a few of my tips for life and costume design … much the same thing in my case! @costumesymposiumuk @billietempledesign
Who needs foreign holidays when they could be in Peckham! I know I am incredibly lucky to have a lovely garden and it has only taken me 30 years – and the amazing skills of @Gary.Baverstock – to understand it and make it what I wanted, a controlled wild garden! The orchard is excellent this year but it’s hard work keeping up with the fruit and I can’t bear waste … war baby mentality … So this is my joy when, and when I am not, working. Incredibly therapeutic when working. I get my best ideas when potting, weeding or chopping up apples! Note to all aspirant costume designers – if you feel stuck but have done good groundwork on a project it will be embedded in your mind so go out, have fun, do something different and the ideas will come!

I am delighted to have been asked to be part of a panel discussion for the British Hat Guild in Luton, centre of millinery supplies. Headwear is incredibly important when establishing a character and I am always amazed by milliners’ skills so this should be interesting. Do come! Details on @britishhatguild Instagram page. I am really looking forward to it, and to meeting the other panellists. Saturday October 14th 2pm at the Hat Factory Arts Centre, Luton. @costumedesign
Friday July 28th in Liverpool: a much anticipated day as I was made a ‘Companion’ of LIPA, a great honour. The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, founded by Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Mark Featherstone Witty, is truly inspirational in its very exciting – but grounded – approach to preparing students to work in all the theatre and media arts. I know – I have employed LIPA graduates! The ceremony took place amidst the graduation classes of 2023, and all 9 of us Companions were ‘invested’, giving speeches intended to inspire the graduees (probably not a word!!). I was no.8 so listened to all the terrific speeches in mounting terror and heard everyone else say my best lines! In fact it was fine as I could mention my real claim to fame was my father who played the ‘cello on a Beatles record (Sergeant Pepper) – he was a great believer in education and would have loved LIPA! The little clip shows me meeting Sir Paul, a very proud moment. He congratulated each student and Companion in turn, was kind, interested and totally charming. Interestingly all the Companions had a common theme which was ‘kindness’ – an essential quality for working in the arts .. and life. A totally memorable day! Thank you to all at LIPA for being so welcoming! @lipaliverpool

I was in Amsterdam for the Septimius Awards earlier this week – the most fun, inclusive, diverse awards in the film industry! I was being given a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ – along with David Parfitt, Anne Dudley, Stephen Warbeck and Felix de Rooy. Only slightly worrying, as I pointed out to them, as I still have things to achieve in my lifetime BUT a tremendous honour and I am thrilled to have been recognised for myself, my crews and Costume Design. As well as the awards evening I was invited to take part in a panel discussion with director Alejandro Monteverde, producer David Parfitt and director/Tulsa Studios founder Ray Blinker (also in the “selfie plus me”). We saw amazing clips from films from all over the world and met wonderful people – a really good 2 days! @septimiusawards

At this time of strikes and honouring those striking for the good of us all … it is lovely to be able to celebrate a small film made by the multi talented Joe Lycett – LINDA. I was very honoured to be asked to participate in the making of this although in truth Ruby Enticknap did all the work! A Birmingham Young Filmmaker – she has a great future! LINDA is being shown in f****** Hollywood next week (as Joe would say but I am more hesitant, polite even, boring …) So GO LINDA!!! Oh, and please make more films as you are a joy to work with! @joelycett @ruby.enticknap @hollyshorts @flatpackfestival @jflcomedypro @boltonfilmfest @neiff_official @shortsightedcinema
