Been working on a new demo reel which required me to scrub through all 5 seasons of The Magicians and all 7 seasons of Once. It was crazy to relive everything again – but especially crazy to watch yourself age years in minutes. Humbling in so many ways. But also it made me remember anew how fantastic those shows were, how beautifully shot, how amazing the costumes were (okay, not so much with Mother Superior, but still). A reminder of how many talented people it takes to make the shows you love come to life. Sending out some hang-in vibes to everyone who really needs to be back at work right now, myself included. For me, directing is a visual and emotional puzzle I’m constantly trying to piece together – with as few pieces missing as possible. To not only tell the story visually, but to shape the mood and the feeling for the audience; it takes tremendous consideration of all the moving parts. This felt particularly important for this film, with its intense subject matter (medically assisted death) and its co-writer’s experience with it; I felt a lot of onus to do this story justice. There is never enough money or enough time but there is always enough heart, and this film has it in spades. Beautiful, nuanced and textured performances by this wonderful cast; I’m very proud of all of you.
