As a westerner I’ve been struggling with how to process or be in anyway helpful, and I think that’s because in something as horrific as this we jump to “What can I do?!” And that immediacy can overwhelm us putting us into disconnection and paralysis.
Here’s the tiny bit I’ve come up with but it might help you:
1. How do I FEEL? (I.e. Writing or talking with someone about MY personal thoughts and feelings around this and adjacent humanitarian issues, not just repeating all the horror I’ve seen). This is how we preserve humanity at its core.
2. How can I CARE for myself so I can care for others?
(I.e. Allow myself to be in discomfort, limit my consumption of news to what my nervous system can handle, eat healthy, sleep, move my body)
3. What can I DO?
Whether it’s to TRY to do something to bring immediate aid to those suffering or to express your condemnation of the violence so our leaders hear us loudly or to teach and BE love and tolerance to prevent this in other parts of the world. You do you.
Even thinking about things like “how can I soothe my nervous system?” seems like such a f’in luxury comparatively, but the process has to start somewhere. But the point is, you have to process it!
