Prominent Iranian actresses have been banned from working by the Islamic Republic regime because they defied the compulsory hijab and supported protests in Iran. Some have proactively said they are willing to give up acting but protect their professional dignity. I’m in awe of their courage.

Islamic Republic state media has announced that 16-year-old #ArmitaGeravand is brain dead. This devastating confirmation of what many had suspected soon after she was hospitalized in a military hospital, comes 22 days after reports of her being attacked by morality police on the metro for not wearing the mandatory veil. As long as we don’t hold this regime to account, history will continue repeating itself and the regime will continue brutalizing Iranians and wreaking havoc in the Middle East. My deepest condolences to her family, and to the Iranian people for yet another tragic loss. #WomanLifeFreedom
Update: Oct 27, 2023 — Islamic Republic state media has reported that after 28 days in a coma in hospital, Armita has died. When a culture of impunity reigns supreme, history repeats itself. Utterly devastating.
#MajidTavakoli, one of Iran’s most prominent liberal thinkers and advocate for secular democracy, is seen handcuffed outside Evin prison as he embraces and says goodbye to his wife Maryam, after being arrested to start serving a 5 year sentence for his peaceful writings. He has been in and out of prison since his twenties, serving a total of 7.5 years in prison, including solitary confinement. He deserves praise and accolades, not punishment. We must raise our voices for his immediate and unconditional release.

The decision by the European Parliament to acknowledge Jina #MahsaAmini and the #WomanLifeFreedom movement with their 2023 Sakharov Prize is an important one. Keeping a light on the plight of the brave women and people of Iran who are risking everything for freedom, is a commitment to peace in the region and beyond. I hope they follow this acknowledgement with action to disempower the Islamic Republic and empower the Iranian people to achieve the freedom and democracy they are risking everything for.
Congratulations to #NargesMohammadi for receiving the 2023 #NobelPeacePrize. She is a fierce and persistent advocate for human rights in Iran and currently imprisoned for her courageous work.

In light of ongoing atrocities by the Islamic Republic on the people of Iran, their support of Hamas, and threats against British nationals, I met again with Security Minister @tomtugendhat to urge the UK government to implement policies to urgently address the root cause of these problems: the regime itself. This includes expulsion of regime officials and cronies, and holding the regime and IRGC to account for crimes against humanity and terrorism. And providing a safe haven for dissidents.
Update – My position on the conflict in the Middle East:
As an advocate for human rights, justice, freedom and peace, I stand firmly with all innocent civilians caught in the crossfires of terrorism and war.
I unequivocally condemn Hamas’s brutalities against the people of Israel. I also condemn them and their primary funder the Islamic Republic regime, for hostage taking and hiding behind their own people to achieve their political agendas. Let’s be clear, they do not care about the Palestinian or Iranian people or their rights. They know that their atrocities will lead to the devastation of their own people. To defeat Hamas we must disempower its enabler, the Islamic Republic.
In exercising its right to self-defense, Israel is bound by the rules of war and must distinguish itself from the non-state, designated terrorist organization Hamas, by not using indiscriminate force. It must not provide Hamas with more propaganda to use for radicalization. That is exactly what Hamas seeks to fan the flames of extremism. Breaking the cycle of perpetual violence takes extreme moral courage. My heart breaks for every innocent life lost.
Woman Life Freedom: The Antidote to the Islamic Republic.
My @osloff New York speech dated Sept 28, 2023.
Because a free, secular and democratic Iran will also help bring lasting peace to the Middle East and beyond.

I attended @oneyoungworld to share my journey in activism, but left having learned far more than I could possibly impart.
While dictators are platformed at the UN, this summit belongs to the young leaders of the world who are impacting positive change.
Courage surrounded me as I joined fellow panelists Hasina Safi, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, @marziehhamidi.official to discussed the plight of Afghan and Iranian women. Special thanks to moderator and OYW Managing Director @ellarobertson_ .
After a powerful keynote by mental health advocate @lucyhale, I was honored to introduce delegate David Johnson to speak. At 24, he is not only in his final year of medical school, but also founder and president of @letsunpackitco, a youth led movement to build hope, end stigma and demand action to make mental health a reality for Caribbean youth.
I also feel immensely empowered and filled with hope after an intimate discussion with leading delegates from across the world. Among them, @crystalasige (Member of Parliament Kenya), @samuelcogolati (Member of the Chamber of Representatives or Belgium), and Anxhela Bruci (anti-human trafficking advocate).
These are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are leading today! Which is why the future looks so bright.
