I won a DGA award for THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. Or rather I should say that myself, Liz Tan, Elaine Wood, Spoon, RichLEIGH, Jesse Carmona and AJ Bruno won a DGA award for THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. And truly, anyone who’s name was ever on a call sheet any of those 116 Days of production shares in this award, both cast and crew, the most cohesive and inspiring I’ve ever worked with. Which isn’t to say the others weren’t cohesive and inspiring, but, given the challenges posed to this crew — the mental, logistical and emotional challenges? My goodness. And if I have ANY regrets about the making of this show, it’s that we could not have a proper wrap to take a deep breath and share in the thing we’d all completed. And we would NOT have completed it without the @celluloidgypsy Liz Tan, our 1st AD. No one will EVER know the feeling of sitting in that office with Liz fighting to save this show. And she’s too modest, so she would NEVER tell anyone the sacrifices SHE made to get this train onto the tracks, to get James and Kiva and I to day one so we could somehow get to days two and three and, eventually, 116. I’ve rarely felt as whole as looking at Liz on set and realizing she was proud of me, that I had lived up to the faith she had in me and the sacrifices she’d made to stick with this show and see it through. On a show with pitfalls EVERY DAMN WHERE, she kept us on schedule, on time, working and reworking and REWORKING the schedule so this crew had reasonable days with damn good vibes (so long as you weren’t driving a Gator 🤣) and an emphasis on mental welfare being every bit as important as securing page counts. I would have loved nothing more than to rent out the Kimball House and just go from table to table shaking every single damn crew-member’s hand; from the teamsters all the way to the women set way back in that elementary school tracing out those patterns — every single damn one. Sadly, that was not to be, but, my SINCEREST thanks to you ALL 🤲🏿

Raven Jackson’s ALL DIRT ROADS TASTE OF SALT washes over you this fall. And I do mean washes — a ravishing, healing wave of sensorial feeling this one, @dopevibrations and @jomofray have conjured Mississippi light and water and, yes, DIRT and catfish soaked muck into a cinematic baptism of Black life. Between this and Aftersun (and a few others in the pipeline) I couldn’t be more proud of the work @wepastel has undertaken over the past few years. Soon come. PS: A special thanks to @mimbale and @indiememphis for the role they played in this. Miriam especially, emphatically 🙌🏿
A reminder from JOI just now — who IS the person in this photo? This happened??? Time is a flat circle 💜
January 14th @IssitaLopez and @HBO gotchu😈 #TrueDetective: Night Country, starring Jodie Foster x Kali Reis. Top of the year, “The Long Night Begins….”
Have Underground Railroad on the brain today. Likely from that strange 4th of July happening. Anyway… there are so many moments in this show that come back to me from time to time. Moments like this unreleased one, a little fantasy we grabbed off the cuff with Aaron and Thuso during a camera test prior to production. Some more familiar images follow it, but… this one… I always loved.
How has it already been a full calendar year, my goodness?
One last special moment from last night ✨
Another Young Couple — borne out of a camera test for If Beale Street Could Talk, James and I asked my friends Essence and Jihaari, newly transplanted to LA to allow us into their home for an afternoon tea about their lives and loves, apart and together. We were migrating to the Alexa 65 for Beale Street and wanted to see for ourselves how that large-format sensor would affect intimate portraiture within lived spaces… in particular the faces and spaces of Black folk. Footage has been lying around since 2017. Happy Valentines Day 💜 Photographed by @mrjameslaxton Edited by @iscaldera (Vimeo link in the big box above)
43rd trip around the Sun. Hopefully like fine wine??? 🤞🏿

On this rainy ass day (though we definitely thankful for the water!) reposting the full version of one of my little flight vids that I posted an excerpt of many years ago. Today felt like a good time to revisit, given the LA rain and the fact that IG now allows video posts of more than 59 seconds. Just a GLORIOUS sunset. Was flying north from Atlanta to Montreal in the Summer over a carpet of low-lying weather. Eventually I had to put my phone down. The purple orange glow stretched towards infinity.
I really did try to thank EVERY damn body I could in the time allotted but trims were made and a runtime adhered to 🥺 Either way, a final thanks and salute to the MOST amazing CREW and CAST of THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. My remarks to you ALL start about 2 minutes in. Y’all know who you are and what it was. My endless love to you 🙏🏿
Remembering that @candlestickem gave @caetanoveloso the @thechopstars treatment for me and yes sometimes sounds meet proper images 👌🏿
Who’s cuttin’ onions in here?!?!? REPOST @iatselatinx Here is a highlight from our IATSE Latinas in Leadership Zoom Discussion. In this clip, you can listen to @cinementine sharing her favorite memory of working on the movie If Beal Street Could Talk with Director @bandrybarry.
Found today while looking for a few things in storage. This post may be triggering for @celluloidgypsy, @beeserps and possibly @lisammagee 🙆🏿♂️💆🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️🤣🤣🤣 (To illuminate a bit, some directors have viewfinders as part of their onset kit, I have these multi-colored pens. Though I can never, ever keep track of the damn things 😝)
From 36 thousand feet, headed home with this head clearing tape after a head clearing trip. Much love as always to @candlestickem @slimk4 and @ogronc for keepin’ it wave’y 🌊 🤲🏿 I left the cabin sound in to convey how it really feels to listen up here 💨
