It was founded by Bette Midler in 1995 to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to green spaces (fun fact: over 1.6 million New Yorkers live within a 10-min walk of a NYRP green space). The organization has made major contributions to the New York landscape and community health, from bringing a functionally extinct native Chestnut tree species back to life in Highbridge Park to helping turn the largest wetland in Manhattan from an illegal dumping ground into a flourishing living shoreline.
