Just the two of us alone on the glacier in Iceland, @drjonkedski and I got out of our tent and we’re greeted by the most spectacular show of the Northern Lights under a full moon.
I can’t remember the last time I have been this lit up. I was running around in the snow like a kid on Christmas in complete awe of the moment.

People ask me all the time if I’m afraid of death.
They heard about my adventures in a rowboat in the Drake, or on the ice in Antarctica, or on the frigid peaks of K2 or Everest, and want to know what’s going through my mind when I’m up against it, in the teeth of danger.
My answer almost always surprises them.
I am afraid of dying. But what I’m more afraid of is not fully living.

This will be a MAJOR test for our biggest adventure yet…

This was just a test run for us to take on the @raceacrossamerica (RAAM) in June, but we feel like we are now set up to smash this world record.

Our first bout of night riding was last night!! 🚴🏼♂️
I got caught in a traffic jam full of semi trucks at 10pm.
@squnge almost lulled himself to sleep on the gentle rolling hills during a 3 hour shift.
Temps dropped as we crossed the border from California to Arizona at 5am.
Just over 300 miles in as the sun rose…
19 hours in now (8am PT on Friday morning) and almost 40% of the way there.
The night requires some digging, but spirits are high high high.
Rolling into another big day as we cross AZ!

HALFWAY through our 1,000 mile ride from Oceanside, CA to Durango, CO! 🚴
We’ve had some highs and lows, but it’s not linear. Our brains can play tricks on us, and tell us “if it’s bad now it can only get worse”. But I’ve found that if you can ride out the storm, often times you can find a deeper strength on the other side of a low moment. It’s all temporary.
I had some rough moments yesterday, but despite riding about 500 miles collectively, my body is stronger today.
This is what it’s all about.
@squnge and I are locked in and ready to close out the next 500 miles over the next 24 hours.
RAAM (the world record race in June) will have a lot of quick and crucial moving pieces, so we’re testing a lot out here! Leapfrogging, fueling, transitions, traffic, communication, and more.

Are you stuck at a 5?
Most people live their lives on autopilot.
You have to risk feeling those 2’s and 3’s – remember you don’t get to those 10’s in spite of your 1’s you get there because of those 1’s
Get out of your 4-6 zone of comfortable complacency.
Take some risks!! 👊🏼
If you’re weak, you can make yourself strong.
If you’re shattered, you can put yourself back together.
If you’re wounded, know that you can heal.
That’s the thing about goals in life.
Realistic, seemingly unrealistic — it doesn’t matter.
When you visualize what you want to accomplish, when you give it voice and agency, you begin focusing on all of the positive possibilities.
And when you’re broken in the way I have been broken, when you’ve been told that your life will never again be the same, you can either accept your fate or fight like hell to retrieve what you’ve lost — and maybe even get to a better place.
Would you sit alone in complete silence for 10 days?
I’ve sat four 10-day silent Vipassana meditation retreats in the past decade. It’s been nothing short of life changing.
Meditation has been such a powerful tool for me.
It has brought me back to so many memories that I would’ve NEVER gone back to.
I challenge you to be alone for minutes, hours, days…

HOW TO BREAK A WORLD RECORD.
It’s all in the details, the logistics, the team. No matter how dialed you are as an athlete, the smallest logistics can derail you.
Our 1000 mile ride across the west from San Diego, CA to Durango, CO the past two days was a test run for our Race Across America world record attempt in June where @squnge and I will be attempting to ride 3000 miles across the country in under 6 days.
The goal of this test run was not for this to go perfectly, but rather expose the cracks in our process so that as a team we can give each other feedback and work to improve toward our end goal.
The process of high performance can look messy at times…but I love this part of the game; making mistakes, iterating, learning, evolving…and there is nothing better than doing that with a team like we have on this project that is fully bought in.

What is the secret to overcoming limiting beliefs? 👇🏼
You are the story you tell yourself.
Flip the script and start telling yourself that you can do it – and all of sudden that becomes your reality. 🙏🏼
Our 1s and our 10s are connected.
Be willing to push yourself from the “zone of comfortable complacency,” between 4 and 6.
Because if we truly want to reach our highest potential we have to be willing to touch our lowest lows. 🙏🏼
Social media can be such a powerful tool – if used correctly.
We are wired for storytelling. And the reason I share my story is to inspire you to take action in YOUR life.
Here’s some advice: Curate your feed with content that inspires you and motivates you – not with content that drags you down and causes you to feel less than someone else.

Yes, it was difficult – but it was also deeply fulfilling.
