Everyone has to face the deaths of people they love, and the profound grief which can follow. When my mother died earlier this year, I found myself surprised by the complex feelings that arose, despite the fact that her death was not unexpected. I firmly believe that the Church – with its centuries of experience in walking with people at the end of their lives and caring for those who mourn – can help us navigate these complex feelings towards death, and the varied levels of preparedness that we can see across society, even in a landscape of increasing religious disaffiliation.
