Math news: this is what the shortest paper Möbius strip looks like! (Relative to the width of course) It was just proved last month, September 2023 by Richard Schwartz, and the proof is pretty easy to follow too! Another vid on that coming tomorrow!
The question “what is math” has been debated for thousands of years, created new branches of math, and even played a role in developing computer programming!
Why is Ethiopia in a different year? Why do holidays like Ramadan, Holi, and Easter move dates each year? That’s because different cultures used to follow different calendars, which may be synced to different things (the sun, moon, both, or neither) depending on what each culture values.
On the invention (or discovery?) of zero!
Have you ever been bumped off a flight because it was overbooked? Luckily it hasn’t happened to me yet 🤞🏽 but I did fly to Cleveland this past summer and they offered vouchers to anyone who volunteered to take a later flight! I probably would have done it if I didn’t have checked bags that I was worried about. The reason planes sometimes overbook is because of long mathematical formulas that dictate how they can optimize as much money as they can from each flight!
Why does 1 1 equal 2? How would you explain it from scratch? Here’s my attempt at a really brief proof using the Peano axioms!
#stitch with @angelhasnotalent (are there stitches on reels?) is it too late for a Roman Empire fact! There was no year 0 between 1BC and 1AD. There was also no 0th century! 1st century AD started with year 1, the 2nd century with year 101, which is why year 2001 was the start of the 21st century (instead of the year 2000 starting the 20th century like it should be 😪)
Part 2 of Magellan’s story, more on his interactions with Filipinos and the Battle of Mactan!
So I’d really like to organize my own little book tour for Math In Drag! If you know any venues that might be interested in hosting, please send em my way! Otherwise let me know where you want me to come so I can see what I can do! 🫶🏽
The new millennium started in 2001, not 2000. That’s because we usually count things starting at 1 instead of 0. But should we start making some more exceptions?
I’m in Mexico!! I visited one of the wonders of the world, Chichen Itza, a pre-Columbian Maya city and a monument of mathematical mastery!
My upcoming book #MathInDrag has a new and improved cover!! Soooo here’s the cover reveal take 2 😂 I feel like it’s so me!
It’s time to turn the clocks back for most of North America! If you’re in Europe, you might have done it last week! Why do we turn the clocks back, and why does every country seem to do it differently? Daylight savings began as a way to conserve energy, since during the long summer days, there’s wasted daylight in the early mornings while people are still in bed. By waking up earlier and going to bed earlier, we can take advantage of the sun and waste less energy on lights. People have already been doing this for thousands of years! Nowadays, most of us live in urban areas and let our clocks to tell us what to do, so we need to adjust our clocks.
In Korea, you could have 3 different ages depending on how you count it! Which age would you prefer?
A short lesson on Maya numerals! The Maya use a base 20 number system, and every number can be represented using just 3 symbols!
Riddle of the day: if 100 people all clink each others glasses, how many glass clinks occur?
A brief lesson on Christopher Columbus!
Some more facts about numbers in base 20! What’s your favourite base?
Is it time for us to stop switching the clocks twice a year? And if so, should we make the switch over to permanent Daylight Saving Time or permanent standard time?
We’re diving into Richard Schwartz’s proof of the optimal paper Möbius strip! And I was lucky enough that he was willing to be interviewed for the video, so that’s him explaining the proof – and his big mistake near the end! If you’d like to read the paper yourself, you can find it on his university page (math.brown.edu/reschwar/papers.html). It took me a couple days to wrap my head around and make the video, but I found it super interesting!
I’m in Portugal! Our little tour of the Iberian Peninsula brings us to the birthplace of another famous explorer from the Age of Discovery, Ferdinand Magellan!
I’m your sparkly glittery teacher for Halloween & all year ✨🚌 #msfrizzle #magicschoolbus #halloween Dress by @starkerscorsetry ❤️
Behold the art of resetting bones, aka “algebra”! 😉 last week I was helping my little brother with his homework and I thought that it might be helpful to some others so I’m making it into a little video series! Here, we’re working on rearranging equations to isolate for a specific variable, how to know where to start & what order to move around terms!
