Man—-critics often ask “what song do you wish you’da written that another artist made?” The answer is always Kast’s “SpottieOttieDopealiscious” but man——this was next level.
I am no stranger to the “departure album” I’ve even taught my first 2 years at NYU about them (Sgt Peppers/Dirty Mind/Paul’s Boutique/Pet Sounds/There’s A Riot Goin On/Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants/Pinkerton/Awaken My Love/Slow Train Coming/Here My Dear)——albums the complete opposite of what the artist is known for)
But man…..if you look at my previous end of year Spotify posts (I went private last year when y’all were DMn me too much about all the Gareth Davis & Dreamflute Dorothee Floller & Steven Halpern & Sun Ra & the 432 Hz tones I listen to “you ok man?” ——Phonte once asked me 🤣🤣😂😂
When asked “how do you cram so much work in ONE day”
The answer is I make time for silence and stillness 2 hours every day since pandemic. That’s the ONLY way to get through this stage of life and not self soothe on pills or drank or all the other 28 addictions.
I knew this 3000 jawn was a left turn but I didn’t know it’s the RIGHT left turn.
I mean cats might have jokes like “this is what they play in massage parlors” or whatnot but dog——-as a dude who listens to @SteveMillerBand ‘s “SPACE” 24/7 Or U2’s “4th Of July” or Prince’s “Colors” on loop to calm down and get outta my head? This 3000 record is easily gonna take up space on my playlist for the next few.
All you newbie meditators/microdosers/“time-out-for-me—before-I-hurt-someone” people who are trying to do better——-THIS is good medicine music for you.
I mean if you aren’t in that space in which you are thinking about seeing life in 2050 & 2060 (nihilism is real….most of hip hop—-me included thought we’d never see 45 or 50……yeah me included) and you are in that space in which you need Space & Silence
This album will be a welcome introduction.
I always said “one day imma make the ambient record I’d love to sleep and dream to” (btw, watching violent shit/sleeping to news/sleeping in stressful environment takes years off your life—-so this is why I invest heavy in stuff like this.)

But since we getting such great feedback on #WHHW podcast (hosted by @open_mike_eagle) I’ll tie the celebration with this post because BOTH those records were our fuel making “Do You Want More”
If you’re not familiar with the podcast (#WhatHadHappenedWas) it’s a hip hop head/music nerd haven that concentrates each season with a guest going thru their cannon talking about how their records got made. So far there are 5 eps (1. My backstory to the roots 2. Organix 3. Organix pt II 4. Do You Want More & now number 5. Do You Want More pt II

Wow I can’t believe @patricia.adores.prince found this mythical legendary flier of a show I heard about that actually goes down in history.
This show is crucial. Before he died Ronald Bell of K&TG shared a story about hearing “I Wanna Be Your Lover” for the first time at this particular venue
Gauging the audience reaction he knew this song was an immediate hit——and as with most craftsmen: you hear a song, you study the elements, you recreate it, you dismantle it and rebuild it into your own.
So he notated the chords & rhythm on staff paper, stared at it….& does what most songwriters do: plays the chords BACKWARDS. Figures out a rhythm that fits.
He gives birth to their biggest song: Celebration.
But it’s a groove, not a complete song just yet. (he now needs a bridge but has no ideas)
On top of the piano is a Billboard Magazine. He opens to the top 100 pop hits to see what song his band would resonate with. It just so happens that the number 5 song in the country was the red hot “Rock With You” (MJ’s “Off The Wall” lp was burning up the world—-so he takes what he feels is the best part of the song (the verse “girl close your eyes let the rhythm get into you”)——grabs those chords —-transposes to a lower key to fit his reverse “Rovel Rouy Eb Annaw I” groove and now he adds the words (“it’s time to come together it’s up to you, so what’s your pleasuaaaagggghh??!”)
& there it is: Prince first hit backwards & Michael Jackson’s hit that proves he won’t be a one hit comeback artist is how we got the inescapable “Celebration” by @koolandthegang. Wow!
