This guy (me circa 1998) could have never predicted he’d one day be releasing a country album that dealt with his drifting away from the faith. It’s surreal to think about sitting down and talking with him, because I can anticipate his questions, his very strong arguments, and his unwillingness to budge. I love him for his convictions and his commitment. Today I’m filled with gratitude. Not just because that guy in this picture opened his heart up to his very real doubt, but because he was able to find a way to grapple with his raw emotions in the musical genre he’s always loved. I’m also grateful for the extremely talented people who helped make my debut album a reality. These songs all started the same way: me, a guitar, and a laptop (it’s not very romantic but I write my lyrics in Evernote instead of being truly cool and hipster and using a pen and pad). I then took these demos to @derekfsongs, asking him to do something he’d never done before: produce a country album. I approached him because, in the couple of times @linkneal and I had worked with him, his attention to detail and commitment to making an incredible final product (in any genre) were so impressive. He set out to assemble a remarkably skilled team of musicians who contributed to a deeply collaborative effort that brought my simple songs to life in ways that more than did them justice. Thank you to each and every one!

The day’s finally here. Human Overboard, my debut album as James and the Shame, is streaming everywhere! This project insisted on making its way out of me, and it feels strange for it to finally be here. I wouldn’t have the luxury of trying something out of the box like this if it weren’t for all of your support, so thank you for that. I’m undeservedly fortunate, and you have so much to do with that. My hope is for the music to make its way to those who might connect with it, and I’d appreciate you listening (all the way through songs), liking, adding to your library/playlists/etc., and sharing with those you think might care about it. As you might imagine, no one was really looking for a country deconstruction album from a YouTuber, so it might take some people some convincing just to listen. And please keep sharing your stories if the music resonates with you and your own experience. Those continue to be the best part of this whole process. Thank you to the wonderfully talented people who helped bring this thing to life, especially my endlessly skilled and passionate producer, @derekfsongs. We did it man! 📸 @annawebber

My 6 song EP “Nothing Left to Love” is officially streaming everywhere! Songwriting continues to be one of the most powerful ways I’ve found to process my emotions, and each of these 6 songs relates directly to a moment, a memory, a person, or an ongoing process that wasn’t easy for me to articulate with simple words. I want to express deep gratitude to the amazingly talented @derekfsongs for producing this during an incredibly difficult year as he battled cancer. I’m forever grateful that he insisted on continuing working on this project through tough times. Thanks as well to the talented musicians who added so much: @astrahle on guitar and pedal steel, @jerryroe on drums, @ianwalsh on bass, @daverosscohen on piano/organ, and @derekfsongs @jessielaneinteriors @linkneal on background vocals. Thanks to @machinejk76 for mastering. Thanks for listening! 📸: @brandon.pavan

My debut album is streaming everywhere! Link in bio. Also…why did I say “resonate” so many times?
The full EP drops tonight at midnight, and you can pre-order the vinyl now. Half of the profits from the vinyl will be donated to @savethechildren to help them in their life-saving work with the children suffering in Gaza.
