“The matriarch of the Mollie’s pack, identified as 779F (right), closes in on the carcass of a dead bison with other members of her pack. The largest female wolf ever recorded in Yellowstone, she lived to be 8 years old—a ripe age for a wild wolf.” – @NatGeoMuseum
Get ready to experience @NatGeoMuseum and @WildlifeArtJH exhibition “Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan!” Come get an up-close look at the lives of wolves in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and high Canadian Artic and learn incredible facts about the wolves themselves (like the fact above).

Winter is by far my favorite time to look for wolves in Yellowstone. Swipe to see one of Yellowstone’s famous wolves, Mr. Blue, checking me out from afar back in 2015.

The bonds between wolves sustains them through challenging hunts, territorial disputes with other packs, raising pups, and much more. Plus, it just feels good for them to be close and to be in relationship – releasing dopamine and other ‘feel good’ neurochemicals when they see each other or when they rub against one another. Here Mr. Blue (right) is greeted by his mate, the White Female, back in March of 2015 as they were courting each other. Eventually, they went on to form the Wapiti Lake Pack in the heart of Yellowstone National Park.

These photographs were taken by @ronan_donovan who we are so pleased to have as a speaker for our @vital.impacts Student Speaker Series!
Ronan has spent a lot of time among wolves. He’s witnessed how wolves are powerful, intelligent, social mammals that have evolved to live in family structures similar to humans and he hopes that his photos will provide people with a better understanding of these often-misunderstood animals. He poses the question, “What if modern humans didn’t have to live in conflict with the natural world? What if the wolf was just a wolf and not only the myths we’ve created? We have lived alongside wolves, even bringing them into our homes, far longer than we’ve lived in conflict.”

Ever wonder how to track wolves? Here are some basic tools to get you started in winter. A basic understanding of animal tracks goes a long way 😀

Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan
This museum exhibit opens tomorrow – Saturday October 21st – in Bend Oregon at the High Desert Museum!
Oregon has been working to establish a viable population of wolves since they began migration into the state around 15 years ago.
The complex human social tolerance in regions where wolves have been absent for decades and then reestablished adds an extra layer of creative challenges to work through.
Thankfully, there are many forward thinking groups and individuals who are working towards a future to soften these challenges faced by people and wolves.
I’m really excited to share this photo exhibit with the Bend community and to bring some educational programming to the museum next weekend, October 26-28th.
Check the link in my profile to see the events schedule or the High Desert Museum’s website/social.
Have a great weekend everyone.
See you in Bend next weekend 😀🐺 @highdesertmuseum @insidenatgeo @natgeomuseum
Check out my friend’s new series #AnimalsUpClose with @bertiegregory now streaming on Disney+. He’s been on some awesome adventures to track down killer whales creating waves in Antarctica, pumas in Patagonia, surfing marine iguanas in the Galapagos, wild dogs hunting for their very cute pups in Botswana and even close calls with jungle elephants in the Central African Republic. The team also showcases the challenges facing these species and celebrates some amazing people working to turnaround the human relationship with the natural world. @disneyplus
One of my favorite scenes is in the first episode – Patagonia Pumas – where they captured an interaction between a wild puma and sheep guarding dogs at night. Check it out! Planet Earth
Some of my favorite encounters in Yellowstone aren’t just with the wildlife.
Photo 1 – Taylor Ganz @trganz and I out on Yellowstone’s winter landscape. Some of Taylor’s recent work surrounds forensic investigation of animal kill sites. Check out her 2022 paper – Wildlife whodunnit: forensic identification of predators to inform wildlife management and conservation.
Photo 2 – Melba Coleman @opticsyellowstone and her spotting scope sharing some roadside wolf tales on a wintery day in Yellowstone.
