Afua Hirsch Instagram – Now that there is a ceasefire in this war, the other war will intensify – the one for control of the narrative
Over the last few weeks we have seen the attempt to maninuplate the telling of this story in so many ways
The dehumanisation of Palestinians – in language which brings to mind Fanon:
“the terms the settler uses when he mentions the native are zoological terms. He speaks of the yellow man’s reptilian motions, of the stink of the native quarter, of breeding swarms, of foulness, of spawn, of gesticulations… Those hordes of vital statistics, those hysterical masses, those faces bereft of all humanity, those distended bodies which are like nothing on earth”
The killing of journalists. This alone.
The prevention of reporters from entering Gaza, making it impossible for reporters to offer the same humanity and pathos they rightly gave Israeli victims of Hamas. Nonprofit Reporters Without Borders has accused Israel of “suffocating journalism in Gaza”. We have relied on so many heartbreaking and brave citizen journalists, whose work has made it impossible to turn away
High profile entertainment figures cancelled or dropped, including Melissa Barrera, Susan Sarandon, and Maha Dakhil
The censorship of statements of solidarity with Palestine, from high profile entertainment platforms
A small line in a @politico story is one of the most important things I have read:
The Biden administration is “concerned” that an “unitended consequence” of the ceasefire will be allowing journalists to report on what’s *actually* happened in Gaza.
In the knowledge that this could jeopardise what public support remains for the devastation it has wrought
The tragedies of the last weeks have brought out the humanity in so many observers and consumers of news, transcending immense pressure and the risk of censure to seek the truth. Time to pay attention more than ever
