Connie Nielsen Instagram – Like so many across the world, I’m sure, I have been struggling to process the onslaught of incomprehensible images of death these past two weeks. I stand in solidarity against any and all anti-semitism and with the families of the dead and kidnapped of Kfar Aza, Be’eri, Ofakim, Sderot, Yad Mordechai, Yated, Kissufim and Urim, who along with the families of the senseless murders of more than 260 Supernova festival participants, suffer immense pain.
These shocking executions, the rape and immolation stand out in a long and bloody history of terror by Hamas. The trauma of the Holocaust is still playing out today with every act of anti-semitism exacerbating the still open wound of unspeakable and unfathomable atrocities committed against Jews.
I have a profound belief in the power of democracy, freedom and tolerance – for all religions and for all non-believers. Only free people can negotiate from a place of strength. I believe in Palestinians’ right to self determination, in their right to dignity, freedom and statehood, and I believe in the sanctity also of the lives of Palestinian civilians. The screams and terror of every Palestinian mother, father and child is equally horrifying, traumatizing even as the suffering builds the foundation of interminable new waves of violence. As humans we must insist on maintaining the human commonality with every single being across the world. There is a need to speak of each issue separately to avoid false equivalency. The amount of gaslighting and selective choice of arguments and context has been awful to watch this past 2 weeks. The war continues to spread among us all and causes an emotionally driven approach to dehumanizing arguments that play loose with facts. But we must also ensure that all issues are addressed, with equal moral force – the historical suffering of the peoples living in Palestine and Israel must be addressed and these will need different approaches than what we have seen up til now. I ask that we stay humble in our approach to information gathering, that we open our hearts to conciliation and that we keep each other’s humanity central to our conversation.
