My cousins and I are the first in our family line who didn’t spend our childhoods twisting undeveloped muscles to pick oranges and cherries and cotton, being cheated out of pennies to keep white men rich on their stolen Indigenous land. This isn’t “history” for so many of us, it’s our aunties who braided our hair with the same hands that bled in a Florida orange grove.
