This is me proudly holding my 3rd solo album “Ghosts”. I am just utterly happy and speechless today and I simply adore this record and everyone who was involved in making it. I smile when I think about creating it, collecting all the tracks and the long and winding journey through producing them. I admire the amazing guests and my favorite artists: @olafurarnalds, @duncan_bellamy_ and @patrickwatsonofficial who contributed to the record in such a profound way. I admire your talent, kindness and it is difficult to express how fascinating it was for me to observe your workflow and creative process. I adore all my patient sound engineers: @viktorarnason, @gijsvanklooster, @manfizazzi, @ignacy.gruszecki, @ataa_d, @donadello and the kindest man on earth: Greg Freeman who gathered all my chaotic ideas and managed to tangle them all together in one mix . Huge thanks to the amazing musicians and performers and the legendary @johnkeithdavis1 from @metropolisstudios for mastering the record. I am in love with a cover image that was captured during one of the summer nights last year by a dear friend @reinkooyman and Veil Projects for the most elegant and cool album design, which I am obsessed with. I adore you truly and I am just happy and grateful to send “Ghosts” to the world today. It is released by the dearest label: @gondwanarecords ecords who put so much heart and attention to it that it’s difficult to process it. Thanks for supporting me and my music and allowing me to expand my musical universe. I hope “Ghosts” will become your everyday soundtrack. Love, H. P.S. Excuse my excitement but the 3rd solo album is a weird thing.
Two days until the album premiere! Proudly wearing my “Ghosts” t-shirt designed specially for this tour by a dear friend and illustrator @lilla.clara. T-shirts and long sleeves will be available at merch stands during the whole tour. I hope that you will like them as much as I do 🙂
It’s Out! Don’t Break My Heart was originally composed in 2017. There was something extremely nostalgic about the original version of the song and I let myself performed it couple of times but I knew that it could never make it to any of my future albums because of its completely old school vibe. I lost interest in the track for a while and let it live its own life till the moment I started to work with @duncan_bellamy_ from my beloved band @PorticoQuartet, which has been such a significant inspiration for me. I asked Duncan if he would be interested in collaborating on a couple of songs for my upcoming album and he agreed. Differently to Patrick Watson, who I invited to work on “Dancing with Ghosts”, I proposed to have a bit of an opposite workflow. Instead of sending Duncan a ready song, I asked him to share with me some selected beats, loops or sequences that I could be inspired by. I didn’t want him to follow the song structure because I am usually using very simple rhythm motives. I wanted rather to follow his intuition in time and rework my own ideas around his beats. This is what happend with DBMH. I found this one terrific loop and pitched it down, so it became deeper and more groovy. Without a reason I thought about singing on top of it my old song “Don’t Break My Heart” even though it was composed in a different metrum and key. This resulted not only in the change in melody but even in the song’s structure and lyrics. And it ultimately felt right. I immediately sent it to Duncan and luckily he liked it as well and added on top an almost translucent layer of live drums which filled the missing gap in the track. It was a tremendously fervent moment from when I just let myself flow with music, soaking the track with a vast amount of choirs and vocal lines and thrilling layers of moog, recorded by my dear friend @ziemowitklimek. DBMH, which used to be an apotheosis of melancholy, received a new character and was embedded in an utterly new soundscape. It became my personal anthem, which endured through time, experiences and letting me overcome my boundaries in expressing my feelings in front of the listeners. You need guts to sing it on stage, believe me.

“Ghosts” – my 3rd solo album is coming out tomorrow. Probably my most important album so far, capturing the most beautiful and turbulent moment in my life. I am looking at this pretty object which hides all my secrets and I have a strange feeling in my stomach. Excited but also utterly scared. See you tomorrow Ghosts! This feels unreal already… Cover photo by @reinkooyman Design by Veil Projects @gondwanarecords @patrickwatsonofficial @olafurarnalds @porticoquartet / Duncan Bellamy

My tour starts just in a couple of days and I thought that it is a nice moment to reveal a bit more about the instruments that became such a significant aspect of my shows – Hoffmann / @bechstein.official pianos – upright and grand. Possibly only a pianist can really appreciate how utterly life changing it is to be able to play everyday on the same keyboard, enjoying this rare luxury of recognizing familiar distances and heights, sounds and silences. It’s difficult for me to come back to my pre-piano memories, I have been working with this wonderful creature for more than 25 years now and very possibly spent in front of the “black and whites” most of my life. I find something profoundly personal in Hoffmann pianos, allowing me to feel both comfortable but also excited on stage and during my recordings. Thoroughly built, with carefully picked elements and warm, rich sound – they became my close companions, witnessing my vulnerable and vehement musical moments. Enjoy this little video telling a story about our relationship 🙂 Director: @miszczynski_ Dop: @kubastoszek 2nd Unit: @latanik.lukasz

Thank you so much for such a warm welcome to my song “Don’t Break My Heart” featuring amazing Duncan Bellamy. It is utterly fascinating to me – the process of micro-dosing the “Ghosts” flavours, one by one. I can just wonder how this combination feels to you now, how it tastes. I wanted to say a couple of words about the video that accompanies the track because Friday’s premiere felt already tumultuous 🙂 It is becoming a tradition that one of my album’s videoclips is directed by a friend of mine: Mateusz Miszczyński, whose other videos (Glass, Leaving, Live from Studio S2) shaped the visual side of my music. I offered Mateusz to work on Don’t Break My Heart because he already knew the original version of the song. He says: “For me the story of DBMH began much earlier than the video itself. It was the very first song that Hania sent me a few years ago, still before her debut album. I remember I was surprised by how different it was compared to the rest of her music. The song somehow stood out and intrigued me. As the topic resurfaced, I already knew that we were working on something personal, perhaps more than ever.” The main idea of the location came from a coincidental find in Luxembourg, where I was supposed to perform in an old main. The show didn’t happen in the end and also we were not allowed to shoot there ultimately but the idea was so strong and frantic that we kept it alive. I had this idea to capture me biking in the main’s tunnels, which we thought could refer to the human mind and wandering through our own tortuous thoughts and fixations. It felt completely weird and wry that’s why we thought it’s just perfectly fitting the track. We decided to contrast the unassuming and casual activity of riding the bike with something very opposite: murky and ambiguous: empty spaces, corridors, hallways & elusive characters that pass my way. Colours and feelings were ardently inspired by creators of eastern european tradition of cinematography such as Andrey Tarkovsky or Bogdan Dziworski, & twisted with current nostalgia for early James Blake or Bat For Lashes videos. The video was shot entirely on film (Kodak) with photography direction by Jakub Stoszek.

I am extremely excited to announce the Album Launch Event for my new record ‘Ghosts’, to be held on 6th October in Polish Radio’s Studio S1, Warsaw. The Polish Radio studios became an important place for my recordings as I found that they have a unique atmosphere that inspired me and allowed me to focus on my work. I had the pleasure of introducing the space to my closest collaborators and musicians, who have joined my sessions for many years, and as a result we managed to deliver a vast amount of music here – including my upcoming album “Ghosts”. Polish Radio offers a lot of spaces, but for this new album I decided to pick the ones that inspire me and the sound the most. The smaller studio, S4, is where we recorded Double Bass and Moog, and the biggest hall, S1, which is famous for its outstanding acoustics, is where we gathered the big strings ensemble. That’s why I am really glad to be able to invite you to this space and explain why it is such a key aspect for my music. I have been ruminating about the album premiere for a while now and was thinking of how to turn it into a celebration of music and people’s connection through it. A perfect example of this is the recording process, where we meet with other people and submerge ourselves into a tremendously intimate environment through the sound and the process of creation. I feel this is a profound thing for me to unfold to my listeners, some of whom will gather in Warsaw on the evening of 6th October, the rest of whom can listen just over a week later when we broadcast the event online in collaboration with my label, @gondwanarecords. The album launch will consist of two parts. We will start with a live performance featuring a special, expanded ensemble and afterwards there will be a discussion hosted by Mari* from Gondwana Records, where she will ask me and @viktorarnason, my long-term collaborator, about the album and its creation. This event will be filmed for broadcast and will be presented in English.
