The concert at Hamer Hall @melbjazzfestival was another magical evening. The audience sang along, danced and welcomed the Melbourne All Star Big Band and myself warmly, much to my delight. On Saturday, 14 October 2023, Australians voted in a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. The referendum did not pass. I had already been asking the Australian team I am working with if they could assist with finding pieces by artists of the First Peoples that I could wear onstage, not knowing of the political shifts taking place. I touched down in Melbourne on 17 October and upon learning of the vote doubled down in my efforts. Unlike my mother, I make it a habit to keep my political opinions separate from my music, however, this time I made a conscious decision to show my support. During last night’s concert I wore a beautiful throw gifted to me by Irene Fisher, a descendant of the Stolen Generations. The moment I walked onstage the place erupted in applause. 2000 plus people in attendance immediately recognized the colors and designs and knew, without me saying a word, where I stand.
