September 3rd 2015 I woke up in Glasgow, Scotland to an image playing on news channels. The image was of Aylan Kurdi.. the 5 yr old little boy in red and blue clothes washed ashore near Turkey who was in a Syrian boat. Reason: his family was trying to flee Syria along with thousands of other refugees just to stay alive. But little Aylan along with innumerable others couldn’t make it. The obvious outcome of War was staring at us in the face.
The haunting image taken by Nilufer Demir changed something in me permanently. I sat there on the bed not able to move, staring at the TV. Later in the day I walked to GOMA aimlessly (something I’d do on any off day). As one walked around with kind of a cold blurry vision, I came across this painting. THE CRIB. Never saw the artist’s name as I stood there paralysed. It finally made sense. We as the human race had failed ourselves.. our own. We weren’t fit to bring in babies into this world anymore. Where there were spikes in cribs waiting for them instead of safety, comfort & life.
This children’s day as the world witnesses yet another genocide and the human race is heinously sacrificing its children yet another time.. we should stop pretending we are the superior race. We should hang our heads in shame as we fail and continue to fail in protecting our babies! And the onus is on all of us!
