BLACK HISTORY MONTH has always irritated me since school days when they regurgitated the same rhetoric every single year with no real depth or care. It was always about the transatlantic slave trade & the US civil rights movement, reducing the wealth & richness of our history to those two moments of time. • It also always struck me as odd because in the UK we had very significant movements of our own within the black community, which impacted the entire country so why were we not being taught about that? • Why was Black history being condensed into one month?? Why was our incredible history and global impact being diminished like this? Why TF were we still having to name the six wives of Henry VIII? • Why are school children not being taught about the many incredible Black inventors, scientists, doctors, surgeons, kings/queens, astronauts, physicists, explorers, activists, pioneers all year round? • Thankfully I have parents who are educators & thought leaders who taught me the vastness of my history. • Just a reminder that I’m Black. Every. Month. ✊🏽🖤🤎 • 2. Olive Morris: Jamaican British community leader & activist • 3. Garrett Augustus Morgan: Inventor of traffic lights • 4. Guion Bluford: First African American astronaut to travel to space • 5. Septimius Severus: Black Roman emperor who ruled in York 193-211 AD • #bhm
