I was recently in New York, the city that never sleeps, famous the world over for its Christmas spirit. There, I felt the urge to open my heart to the Lord, and to those who feel – and often are – marginalized, discarded, and forgotten. When the baby Jesus came into the world, he was laid in a manger, since there was no place for him. Just like him, many people cannot find a place in our society. A priest friend of mine, who performed his ministry with some such people in Haiti and who now does the same in New York City, offered me the chance to experience the Eucharist with the Our Saviour parish. There, I also met, prayed, and sang with some homeless friends whom the Community of Sant’Egidio cares for. I felt like the shepherds in Bethlehem who met the Lord wrapped in swaddling clothes in the manger. May this Christmas be an opportunity for all of us to serve and show our kinship with the needy. This is what I humbly strive to do because I know how the Lord has helped me. It is also what Veronica and I aim to do with the ABF Foundation: we always try to seek out the forgotten and offer them a chance for rebirth and success.
